REU Kick-off Information

Morning Meeting Agenda, Monday June 6.

1.  Anyone who is unable to stay through August 12th needs to give that notice officially to Carolyn and Juliet by Friday June 10.

2.  Any questions or problems over the first weekend?

3.  What are everyone’s July 4th plans, thus far?

4.  Who does not yet have an Ethics text book? (more are on order)

5.  Lab Equipment: Upon entering your lab today, be sure to find out immediately what lab equipment or procedures you need to be trained on. Let Juliet know by Tuesday (email me at or call 243-2590) and I will arrange for group training sessions to be more time efficient for our research staff who will assist you in that. The Biomedical students already have a biomed lab safety/protocol training session for this Wednesday, June 8 from 10:30 to 12. Brian Helmke is in charge, contact him for information on where to meet ( or 924-7126).

6.  You must buy a lab journal and keep a daily record of your activities and lab research. This will greatly assist in the preparation of your final project materials and is mandatory.

7.  Your final “Deliverables” for your 10-week course of study includes preparation of a formal scientific Poster, an Oral Presentation, and a Written Research Paper.

8.  Our next full group meeting will focus on Item 7, and will be held: Tuesday, June 14th in the Newcomb Hall Dining area from 12:00 – 1:30, with Carolyn and Juliet.

9.  In the third week of the program, Juliet will be making lab visits to do photography for our REU web site.

10.  Would anyone like to help assist in the rapid development and subsequent maintanence of a program web site? Anyone wish to focus on web photography?

11.  You will have a LOT of reading in the first 2 weeks of the program, since the course is concentrated early on. Stay on top of this as well as your active and creative participation in your labs.

12.  In early to mid-July you will make an interim research presentation on the progress of your summer research. Carolyn will discuss the details at our Tues. lunch meeting.

13.  You are responsible for attending Team Meetings that take place within your lab and research area. Make sure that you check with your faculty mentor and are placed on relevant mailing lists and kept informed of all lab activities, meetings, and expectations.

14.  Beyond this summer’s final presentation materials, there is potential for such things as developing journal articles, patent applications, and giving conference paper presentations in the semesters following. UVA will be able to fund your travel from home institutions to conferences. So the farther you take your summer research, the more it can sustain work and experiences in your future. Be ambitious!

15.  The Dining Hall problem: the primary Newcomb Dining Hall opens on June 13th. Meals during the Mon-Fri week of June 6-10 should be through the on-grounds dining locations. Buy dinner ahead of time since most places are closing at 3 or 4 pm this week. Next weekend will be the same as this past: we will reimburse you for your meals, but you must turn in all receipts and pay in groups of 2 or more. Meal dollar restrictions are as follows: you can spend (including tax and tip) 6$ on breakfast, 11$ on lunch, and $17 on dinner. Do not go over this amount per person.

16.  Weekend Excursion Discussion: We will organize trips to King’s Dominion, to do rafting down the James River, and, if there is interest, to go Ice Skating (on the Downtown Mall), to tour Monticello (Jefferson’s Home), and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. What are other places/things of interest to you guys? (Juliet’s rock band Clare Quilty is playing a cd-release party show at Starr Hill on Friday, July 8th for anyone interested)
