Minutes of the SNIA Annual Members’ Meeting: 04 October 2012

  1. Welcome
  • Leo Leger, Executive Director, welcomed everyone to SNIA’s 2012 Annual Members’ Meeting being held via conference call. He completed roll call and reviewed the agenda.

  1. Approval of Minutes
  • 2011 Annual Members’ Meeting Minutes
  • Motion by Wayne Adams (EMC) and second by Dave Dale (NetApp) to accept the 2011 SNIA Member Meeting Minutes. Quorum of 15 Voting Member Company Representatives or their designates was not initially met.
  • Quorum was eventually met at the end of the meeting and the original motion was passed unanimously and the 2011 Annual Members’ Meetingminutes were approved.
  1. Annual Highlights (Presenter: Wayne Adams, SNIA Chairman)
  • Announcement of 2012-2013 Board of Directors and Technical Council members:
  • The annual Board of Directorsand Technical Council (TC) election closed on 9/30/12.
  • Tony DiCenzo (Oracle), Skip Jones (QLogic), Peter Manning (HP), SW Worth (Microsoft), and Al Zmyslowski (Fujitsu) were re-elected to the board for a 2-year term.Wayne Adams (EMC), Dave Dale (NetApp) and Glen Jaquette (IBM) will complete their two-year elected terms. Jim Pappas (Intel Corporation), and Molly Rector (SpectraLogic) remain as voting board members in appointed seats. Non-voting board members include SNIA Executive Director (Leo Leger) and the TC Chair. Three board seats remain open.
  • Craig Carlson (QLogic), Don Deel (EMC), Fred Knight (NetApp), Doug Voigt (HP), and Alan Yoder (Huawei) were re-elected to the TC.Duane Baldwin (IBM), and Mark Carlson (Oracle) remain as voting TC members. Non-voting board members include Gilles Chekroun(Cisco, Belgium) and Arnold Jones (TC Managing Director). Two TC seats remain open.
  • Executive Officer positions for the Board and TC will be conducted 10/14/12 and announced at Storage Networking World Santa Clara.
  • The Board is in the process of updating the bylaws to include Board Advisory representatives which would adhere to a one company/one vote rule.
  • Organizational Structure
  • The number of companies and volunteers has remained steady. A new membership category, Service Providers, was added this year. SNIA continues marketing itself through roadshows, webinars, website and recorded tutorial sessions. The partnership with CompTIA brought a new exam, CompTIA Storage+ Powered by SNIA. There are plans to make the exam available in other languages.
  • The Organization is comprised of 13 full-time staff members plus contractors, led by Executive Director, Leo Leger and broken down by five departments: Operations, Marketing, Membership, Education and Technical. Membership activities are heavily focused on and led by the Membership Services Manager and Business Development.
  • There are no changes to the geographies of the Regional Affiliates.
  • Brazil is working in provisional mode and is in the process of becoming fully operational.
  • China is going through a transition in their leadership team. An announcement will be made in November at SNW China.
  • Japan will celebrate their 10-year anniversary in November.
  • The following groups were added in 2012:
  • Alliances: International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T), Joint Technical Committee (JTC1) and Cloud Standards Customer Council.
  • Analytics and Big Data Committee and Strategic Alliance Taskforce
  • Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) Programming and Linear Tape File System (LTFS) Technical Work Group (TWG)
  • eXtensible Access Method (XAM) and Fixed Content Aware Storage (FCAS) TWG retired.
  • Programs
  • Cloud Storage Initiative (CSI): The approval is pending this month forCloud Data Management Interface (CDMI) specification to be designated as an International Standard (IS) by the Joint Technical Committee 1 (JTC 1), a joint effort of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). An announcement will be made at SNW Santa Clara. Multiple Cloud Plugfests are conducted throughout the year in North America, Europe, and Asia.
  • Green Storage Initiative (GSI): Launched the SNIA Emerald™ Programat SNW Orlando in October 2011 and is working with the EPA to launch the SNIA Energy Measurement Specification.
  • Storage Security Industry Forum (SSIF): Working to provide the Key Management

Interoperability Protocol (KMIP) Test Program

  • Education Program: e-Courses were launched in early 2010, a partnership with CompTIAwas developed, the CompTIA Storage + Powered by SNIA (SGO-001)exam replaced the Storage Network Foundations (S10-101) exam in January and became ISO approved in June, and the Storage Networking Management/Administration (201) and Assessment, Planning and Design (300) exams were recently refreshed and will be rolled out Q1 2013.
  • SNIA Tutorials remain popular at industry-wide events. They are video-recorded and available on the website repository.
  • The SNIA 2012 Dictionary continues as a recognized industry resource. The 2011 version was announced as a winner of APEX publishing Award for outstanding resource category.

  • SNIA’s fiscal year is December 1-November 30.
  • 2011 was a break-even year and 2012 is also looking to be break-even. Revenue is sourced through membership, education, and events. Annual revenue was less due to membership consolidation. The Board of Directors will soon start FY2013 budget planning.
  1. Summary
  • Wayne announced 2012 was a productive year and thanked the volunteers for their participation and support. SNIA will continue to pursue strategic programs in 2013.
