YourSecondaryEducation(SED)applicationwillbeassessedbyacommitteeofprofessorsinyourchosensubjectarea.TheywillconductSubjectMatterDepartmentalReview(SMDR),whichmayincludeaninterview,presentation,and/orwritingsample(dependinguponyourspecificsubjectarea).TheSMDRcommitteewillrankandselectapplicantsforaSEDdepartmentalinterview.OnlythoseapplicantswhopassSubjectMatterDepartmentalReviewwillbeconsideredforadmission.TheSEDcoordinatorwillnotifyapplicantsoftheSMDRresultsandscheduleSEDprograminterviews.

AllapplicantsapplyingtothefifthyearprogramleadingtoaCaliforniateachingcredentialinArtareassessedaccordingtotheArtDepartmentSubjectMatterDepartmentalReviewcriteria.ThisincludesallstudentswhohavegraduatedfromHumboldtStateUniversityorfromanyotheruniversitywithaCommissiononTeacherCredentialing(CTC)approvedSubjectMatterProgram(ArtEducation)andthosewho come byway of theCSET.Nooneis exemptedfromthe assessment evenifa studenthas completeda SubjectMatter Program,takentheCSET,orhavetakenotherrelatedcourses.StudentswhohavenotcompletedaCTC-approvedSubjectMatterMajor(ArtEducation)arerequiredtopasstheCSETexams–Art:SubtestI:ArtisticPerceptionHistoricalandCulturalContextoftheVisualArtsAestheticValue. AllrequiredexamsmustbepassedbeforebeginningtheSEDprograminAugust.
Theserequirementsareestablishedinorderthattheuniversitywillbeabletoverifyteachercredentialcandidateswhoarebestqualifiedtoteachin CTCdesignated mediaareasandartdisciplinesinDrawing, Painting, Ceramics,ArtHistory, plusabroad abilitytoteachinseveralofthefollowingdisciplines:GraphicsandComputers,Photography,andPrintmaking.
1.AssessmentofTranscript
CandidatesmustpossessanoverallGradePointAverage(GPA)of2.67.Thosewhosegradepointaveragefallsbelowtherequiredminimum will be informed ofthe appealsprocess. Candidates who have completed subject matter programsin Art shall have a minimumofa"B"averageinthoseArtcourseslistedintheHSUsubjectmatterprogramandinadditionalorremediation courses inArt,whichmaybenecessarytosatisfydeficienciesrevealedbytheassessment.
2.AssessmentofSubjectMatter-WrittenandOralandPortfolioReview

Forapplicants applyingforthe2016-2017academicyear,theassessmentwill take placeonSaturday,March5, 2016 andwill last betweenfourtofivehours.Thereisnotamake-updayforthosewhomisstheassessment.JoAnneBerkewillbecontactingyoupersonallyregardingthedatesandtimeofreviewassessment.

2CandidatesshallhavesubmittedacompleteSEDApplicationPacket.
3Portfolioofaminimumoftenoriginalartworks;drawings,figuredrawings,paintings,ceramics,andabroadrepresentationfromgraphics,photography,printmaking,jewelry,sculpture,andcomputergeneratedimages.Slidesmaybesubstitutedforuptoone-halfoftheportfolio.Ifapplicable,includealistofexhibitions.
4Oneblackandwhite,proportionallyaccurate,headdrawing,aself-portraitdoneasademonstrationduringtheassessmentperiod.Pleasebringfavorite,sharpened,drawingpencilsanderaser(s),Iwillprovidethepaper.
5Bluebookessayonarthistory(assignedondayofassessment);essaytoincludecommentsonaesthetics,styles,materials,thecultureandsignificantartcontributionsoftheperiod,andashortcommentaryonwhichartists,stylesand/orperiodsofarthavehadthegreatestinfluencesonapplicant'sartworkdoneduringtheassessmentperiod. PleasebringBluebookandsharpenedpencils.
EachapplicantshallhaveapersonalinterviewwithanArtEducationCommitteeduringtheassessmentperiod. Thecommitteeincludesmembersoftheartfacultyandsecondaryartteacherswhoarementorteachersorformermentorteachers.ThecommitteewillhavedevelopedbroadlyinterpretedcomprehensivetopicsbasedonArtEducation,VAPAFrameworkand/ortheapplicant'sacademicandstudiopreparation. Assessmentduringtheinterviewwillbebasedinpartoncommunicationskills(appropriatelanguage,vocabulary,bodylanguage,attire,etc.),thinkingskills,values,attitudeandknowledge.
