It is Compulsory that all riders under the age of 18 and/or Juniors MUST WEAR PROTECTIVE HEAD GEAR that complies with Recognised Standards.

IN THE INTEREST OF YOUR OWN SAFETY Cycling Time Trials and the Event Promoters strongly advise you to wear a HARD SHELL HELMET that meets with an Internationally accepted Safety Standard.

CTT recommend that a working rear light, either flashing or constant, is fitted to the machine in a position clearly visible to following road users and is active whilst the machine is in use.

Nev Crane (1935 – 2006)

There will be many riding this event that will not know who Nev Crane was and why he is held so dearly in the memory of those that knew him. For my part living in the south I had only heard of Nev through the pages of the Cycling Mag. So often it would have been something like “Nev Crane Wins Again”. On moving to Lincolnshire in 2000 I was so pleased to find myself in the company of the man I had only ever read about 40 or more years previously.

Nev began his riding with the Boston Wheelers. Entering the RAF in 1953 to do his National Service. His prowess as a racer had gone before him. He may well have had a Trade but a lot of his 2 years was spent racing for the RAF. On demob it was not long before he was back in the action and gaining a 3rd place in the inaugural Lincoln Grand Prix in 1956. Narrowly losing out in a sprint finish.

Not long too either, before he was representing GB in races such as The Tour of Tunisia, Tour of Holland and the Warsaw-Berlin-Prague. Riding 5 Tours of Britain in the days when they were run over a 2 week period. A stage win and many high placings came the way of this tenacious rider. Later he was to become a mechanic for the GB Team.

By 1965 he had moved to Sleaford to open up a Cycle Shop. At this point the Sleaford Wheelers had become dormant. Nev and the late John Porter were instrumental in reviving the club. Nev continued to race and it was only in 2007 that his 100 mile club record was broken after almost 40 years. To this day his name still stands as the 12 hour record holder with 251 miles. A career that included over 100 Road Race wins, arguably would place him as the most successful rider ever to come out of Lincolnshire.

Retiring from racing he devoted time to his shop, the club and numerous committees. Event organising, course measuring, marshalling, timekeeping. If there was a job to be done then Nev would be at the front. Even with all his success as a racer it could be said that he put far more back into the sport than he ever took out of it.

Sadly on March 22nd 2006 while in the company of a few friends, Nev passed away at our Wednesday Run meeting point at Kirkby la Thorpe.

It is indeed an Honour and a Privilege to promote the Nev Crane Memorial 25 Mile Time Trial in memory of such a great man. Now in its 9th year it has attracted some of the best and biggest fields ever seen in Time Trials in the County.

Doug Laidlow.
