Summary
Summery drill:
A solution to the problem; ‘How is it possible to convert electrical energy to rotating mechanical energy in a multifunctional device’, is an electric drill.
To solve this problem, there must be started at the beginning. The beginning is an analysis of the stakeholders and their interests in the product. From there you can using a product-model and description of all the functions to work towards a program of requirements.
After a thorough analysis of the own product, and after a comparison with the program of requirements, there are still some improvements possible.
Summary davit:
To solve the problem; ‘How can a jet ski being hoist on and from the deck from a yacht’, the must be designed and made a davit.
This report describes an analysis of the problem. Also, the stakeholders with their corresponding interests are named in this report. This is necessary to establish a good program of requirements. To be well prepared for the next phase, where the davit will be designed, there is mentioned a piece of orientation in materials and production methods.
When written as a function block diagram and list of requirements, there will be a good overview of what a product should be able to do. This is a good set-up to have, before continuing with the next phase, the design phase.
After analysis of the different materials and manufacturing methods, there is a conclusion that contains information about the material of the davit. There are also conclusions on the production.
Introduction
We are preparing to build a davit. These preparations start with an exploratory stage. Here we need to figure out what the exact problem is, and from there we can move on to the next steps. Besides the preparation for the davit, everybody has brought his or her own product. With this product can be practiced how to write down specifications of the product, and what the problem was the product was invented for. This product will be completely disassembled for analysis. Through the SMART-system, we will make a detailed problem analysis from both our own product, as the davit.
Conclusion
By first working back from a product to a problem, it is possible to improve (parts of) a product. Starting from a problem, makes sure that you are not thinking within some frameworks. When you start at the bottom of a problem you can think creatively outside the box, to find a solution. In this case, with the own brought product, outside the box thinking is not in order. Because the product already exist. Only a few small improvements can be made. This is different for the davit, because the draft for the davit has yet to be designed.
It is important to start with a problem, and use the same steps to process as done in this report. Then eventually there will follow a program of requirements, function block diagram and all the functions. From that point there can be worked towards a concept design plan.
To hoist a jet ski in and out of the water, there must be made a davit. This davit must hold a heavy load, therefore the materials which are going to be used to build it, are probably steel or stainless steel. But thinking of the fact that the davit will become in contact with (salt) water, stainless steel will be preferred over ordinary steel. It also appears that the two largest stakeholders are the producer and user of the davit, therefore their demands will be considered as the most important. Because this davit will only be built once, production techniques for mass production will not be used.
