SIXTH GRADE PRE-ENROLLMENT INFORMATION
2017 – 2018

- It is most important for you to discuss with your parents the selection of courses offered for next year. Please make your selections with care.
- All sixth grade students must enroll in seven periods per day for both semesters. Students will be required to take five full year courses. Students will select elective courses to fill their schedules.
- Required courses for sixth grade students will include two semesters each of math, language arts, reading, scienceand geography Western Hemisphere. Central Middle School places a strong emphasis on mathematics and reading. In addition, Fundamentals of Mathematics or Fundamentals of Readingmay be required for the full year for any student not achieving SATISFACTORY on the 2017State Math and/or Reading test.
- Honors courses are available in language arts and math. The acceptance will be based on prior test scores and teacher recommendations.
- All elective courses that are offered must be filled to 90% capacity in order for them to be considered as established courses. If not, these courses will be eliminated and those students will be given their next elective choice.
- Select your courses with care, remembering that it will be difficult to change your schedule. However, if you find that you must change, a counselor will be available to talk with you about changing an enrollment form. If parents wish to speakwith a counselor they should call 355-8544 between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. prior to May 26, 2017.
- Each student will have his or her own locker. At enrollmentin August, students will be given a locker assignment, lock and combination.ADHESIVE LOCKER DECORATIONS ARE PROHIBITED due to the permanent damage this causes.
A Mini School Day will be scheduled for the afternoon of August 3rd for students to follow schedules, meet teachers and familiarize themselves with the middle school experience.
- It is important for you to clear all financial obligations with the school before summer vacation. You will not receive your report cards or be allowed to enroll at the beginning of school until you have paid all financial obligations.
6th GRADE ELECTIVE SUBJECTS AND COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
ART: Art is a one or two semester coursethat includes instruction in basic drawing, painting, design, sculpture, crafts and mixed media. Students will be required to pay a fee of $10 for supplies.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION: This one or two semester course will give students the opportunity to learn the rules, understand theory, and participate in various team and individual sports. Health will be incorporated in daily instruction. All students will be required to dress out (shoes, socks, and appropriate exercise clothes) and participate each day, as a major part of the grade is determined by these two factors.
EXPLORE ELECTIVES
COMPUTER KEYBOARDING: This twelve-week course is designed to introduce students to basic functions of typing and word processing.
SPANISH: This twelve-week course introduces students to the language, culture, and history of Spanish and Portuguese speaking nations.
PLTW INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE 1: This twelve-week course will introduce students to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Students discover the principles of this fast-growing field by focusing on creativity and an interactive design process as they create their own basic apps using MIT App Inventor. Coursework includes hands-on activities and computerized applications. Students must have a gmail account or be able to make one.
BEGINNING BAND: This is a full year course that does not requireany musical background. The beginning band will perform at least 2 concerts, 1 contest, and have an opportunity to perform solos and ensembles. Some afterschool rehearsals may be required.
Brass Class - This group is made up of brass instruments only: trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, and tuba. Woodwind & Percussion Class – This group is made up of woodwind and percussion instruments only: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone and all percussion
Band students are required to rent or purchase a good quality instrument through an established music store. The music store offers insurance on the instruments, which is strongly encouraged. CMS even provides some of the larger instruments but there are a limited number of school owned instruments.
BEGINNING ORCHESTRA: This course is designed for students who have either limited or no previous strings experience. All classes are full year courses in which students gain facility on bowed stringed instruments, the violin, viola, cello, and bass. All materials are furnished except for violins and violas, which can be rented at local music stores. Students are required to furnish their own uniforms for performances.
VOCAL MUSIC: Vocal music is a full year course. All members are required to attend a few extra rehearsals and performances. Some activities take place after school or in the evening. Absences from required performances will affect the students’ grades, so they must be able to attend each event.
