Sixth Grade Language Arts (LA6)

RidgecrestIntermediateSchool

2017.18

Welcome! I look forward to teaching all of you! The following information will answer some of your questions about what is expected of you in this class. This is intended to help you meet with success and avoid difficulties. I’m also excited to implement our new web-based textbook, StudySync. We will reviewing access, navigation, student assignments/assessments and more in the first trimester to better understand student expectations and the many tools available for students to succeed in LA6! Language Arts classes will require more critical thinking, collaboration, and participation to help and encourage our students to grow as avid readers, skilled writers, articulate speakers, and proficient learners.

Homework: Homework will be assigned periodically throughout the week. It is each student’s responsibility to turn in all assignments on time! I accept late work (one day only!!) for half credit. Long-term assignments are not accepted late unless previous arrangements are made with the teacher. Home reading logs are due each Friday, signed by a parent or guardian. Name, period, and the date must be on all assignments to receive credit. Please use the following heading for eachassignment:

Example:

Academic grade: Academic grades will be determined by points earned for homework, written assignments, core novel projects, tests, quizzes, and participation. Trimester grades will be based on the following scale: 90-92% =A-, 93-97%=A, 98-100%=A+; 80-82%=B-, 83-87%=B, 88, 89=B+; 70-72%=C-, 73-77=C, 78,79=C+; 60-60=D-, 63-67=D, 60-62%=D- … below 60% =F.

Citizenship grade: Good behavior is expected. Code infractions (violations) will be given when classroom/school rules are broken. This includes being tardy, so be on time and seated when the period begins!

Absences: Students will find school to be more difficult if absent frequently. Please check with study buddies or Edline for any missed assignments. Students have one day for each day of excused absence to make up the work missed.

Textbooks: Each student is responsible for bringing their Close Readers to class each day. Our new textbooks will remain in the classroom, but will later be available online. More information on this will be forthcoming.

In conclusion, if these guidelines are followed, and students think critically, stay focused, and actively participate, the school year will run smoothly! I may be reached by phone or e-mail, or

students/parents may arrange an appointment. My phone number at RIS is: 544 2747 ext. 220, e-mail: .
