WELCOME TO…MR. LEMBKE’S Global 10 History and Geography Class

COURSE OUTLINE

Listed below are guidelines for this school year. Included is what will be needed from each student as well as what will be expected. I am looking forward to an exciting school year!

3 Glue Bottles (Liquid NOT glue stick!)

Altered Book (Old Discarded Book that is at least 250 pages and measures approximately 8” wide by 10” tall)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

History is an exploration of world events from the beginnings of civilization. Not only will the class cover the history of the globe, but also the geography. Students will study topics through teacher directed lectures, discussions, projects, reading and homework assignments. Students can expect to work in cooperative groups and individually.

EXPECTATIONS

CLASSWORK: This class has been designed to make the learning of world history fun and exciting. Many unique and creative activities will take place throughout the course of the year. We will also be working on the skill areas of reading and writing. Students can expect to do a great deal of both throughout the year.

HOMEWORK: Students will receive homework assignments and additional assignments throughout the marking period. If an assignment is missed due to absence, it is the student’s responsibility to make up the assignment. All homework is posted on my Web site, and on the whiteboard in my classroom.

ALTERED BOOKS: An Altered Book (notebook) will be kept for the entire year. Altered Books must be kept neat and should NOT be shared with any other subject.

TESTS / QUIZZES: A test will be given at the end of each unit. If a student is absent for a test, it is the student’s responsibility to make up the test. Quizzes will be given weekly, typically on Wednesday’s.

PROJECTS: Students can expect to receive one major project per quarter. Students will receive a rubric sheet outlining all of the necessary requirements of each project and it will be posted on my Web site. Students will have two weeks to complete the project.

ESSAYS: Students will complete a minimum of two NYS Regents essay papers each marking period. Papers must be word processed. Information and rubric will be provided and will be posted on my Web site. Students will have one week to complete the essay.

PHOTOGRAPHS: Throughout the school year you/your child will be engaged in various school-sanctioned activities that may be photographed for educational purposes. By signing this course outline, you are giving permission allowing for the use of photos of your child in school documents, the district Website, or other public literature. Please contact me if you have questions on this matter.

CLASS RULES

  1. BE ON TIME, READY, AND PREPARED TO WORK when the bell rings with all required materials.
  2. RAISE YOUR HAND AND WAIT TO BE ADDRESSED before speaking or getting out of your seat.
  3. KEEP HANDS, FEET AND OBJECTS TO YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES
  4. BE COURTEOUS & RESPECTFUL TO OTHERS

CLASS PROCEDURES

Below are the class procedures we will use this year to ensure that each class runs smoothly. We must all work together with mutual respect to make this a great success!

Entering the classroom- Walk into the classroom and sit in your assigned seat by the time that the bell rings. You should begin working on the bellwork immediately upon sitting down.

Bellwork- Bellwork is always posted on the whiteboard and should be addressed right away.

Announcements- During announcements, please refrain from speaking (even if working in a group situation).

Dismissal- The bell is for the teacher. The bell does not dismiss the class. Mr. Lembke will dismiss the class. Upon dismissal chairs should be pushed in, garbage picked up, books put away, and the room should appear clean and organized. You are to remain in your seat until Mr. Lembke dismisses you.

Emergency Procedures- Fire or other emergencies must be followed in accordance with the school policy.

Handing in papers- Papers should be handed in to your left and I will collect the piles when they reach the right side of the class.

Classroom Quieting- When Mr. Lembke raises his hand the class will 1. Freeze, 2. Face Mr. Lembke maintaining eye contact, 3. Be prepared for instruction as I will have something to say.

Seeking Attention of Mr. Lembke- 1. If you wish to speak raise your hand with your index finger extended 2. To ask to go to the bathroom raise your hand with your fingers crossed. 3. If you need my help raise three fingers. I will respond to any of these signals with a nod.

Work has been completed early- Start on your homework, work on your essay, work on your project, review your textbook, organize your alternate book.

Forgot a material- If you need a writing utensil raise three fingers and Mr. Lembke will provide you with one.

Transitioning between tasks- Mr. Lembke will give you a warning that you will need to close up a task. You will then change to the task by closing the other material that you were working on. You will then refocus on the new task.

Group Work- 1. You are responsible for your own job and the results of the group, 2. If you have a question, ask your support buddies. 3. You must be willing to help a support buddy if he/she asks for help. 4. If no one can answer a question, then agree on a consensus question and appoint one person to raise a hand for help from the teacher.

Visitor in the Classroom- If we have a visitor (non-student) they will be addressed as Mr. or Mrs. ______The visitor should be thanked for their time if they have addressed the class formally.

Indicating that you understand- Give me a thumbs up. If you do not, I will assume that I need to provide further direction.

Structure for Headings- Name top left, Period on top right, Class bottom left, Date bottom right

Additional Help- If you need additional during class follow the procedure for how to get my attention. If you need help after class, I stay after school on Monday’s and Thursday’s. I may be available at other times, so please see me at the end of class and ask.

Late to class- Hand me your late pass and go right to your seat. If you don’t have a late pass then you have broken a rule and will follow the consequences of the rules.

Remember… Rights and Responsibilities --Not excuses! You make the grade –I merely record the grade. Your work is your responsibility… Students will be graded according to the following schedule:

20%In-Class Assignments / Participation/ Homework / Quizzes / Attention

20%Essays: 1 Thematic Essay and 1 DBQ Essay

20%Tests

20%Altered Book

20%Exam

I will be happy to meet with you during my free periods (providing you do not have a class to attend) and after school on Monday’s or Thursday’s.
