Sixth Form Options 2016

Dear Parent / Guardian

Thank you for your support at our Pre 6th Evening on 4th February. The combination of subjects selected by pupils wishing to return to the Sixth Form varies tremendously each year due to the varying aspirations of each cohort. To accurately reflect pupils’ preferences by positioning subjects in option columns and to get a further indication of pupil numbers, provisional option forms were issued in our Pre 6th Evening, based on an initial pupil survey. The choices made by pupils on the provisional option forms, together with any potential clashes, have now been analysed and we have tried our utmost to ensure that as many pupil choices and subject combinations as possible can be accommodated for September 2016.

To meet the pupil demands for Engineering and Geography, these subjects have now been moved to Options 3 and 4 respectively. Similarly, ICT has now been moved to Option 5.

As advised in the Pre 6th Evening and in the Sixth Form Course Prospectus, all courses on offer are dependent upon sufficient pupil uptake. Some courses generated low numbers on the provisional option forms, but where possible, the School has tried to accommodate these courses through alternative delivery models.

Due to very low numbers of pupils expressing an interest inBTEC Music Performing, BTEC Sports Studies, BTEC Performing Arts, BTEC Food Science, Cambridge Media and Cambridge ICT, these courses will no longer be offered.

As advised in the Pre 6th Evening, the School could not have offered all subject combinations requested by all pupils. The outcome of the above measures has meant, however, that the vast majority of pupils who returned their forms will be able to select the subject combinations that they requested.

A revised option form, based on pupil choices made, is enclosed for you and your child to know what choices will still be available in the Sixth Form in September.

We now have provisional numbers for courses for September 2016, however the actual group sizes will depend upon examination results and the final choices that pupils make after their GCSE results in August. As a result, the courses being offered on the enclosed Options Form will still be dependent upon sufficient pupil uptake in September.

Pupils are not required to indicate their final choices at this stage as this process will be undertaken during Enrolment Week.

Enrolment Week

The first week of term in September for post-16 students will be Enrolment Week, which will focus on the final course selection of each pupil. Mr Bryant, Post-16 Pathway Leader will be leading this, with the support and guidance of Miss Powell. In addition, interviews with pupils and parents may be arranged as required.

Pupils with the minimum entry requirements may provisionally enrol on Friday 2nd September 2016. They will need to attend a presentation in Deepweir Rise Room at 8.45am to receive information about enrolment procedures and expectations of them in the Sixth Form. Pupils will then be able to register an interest for courses, which will be reviewed by Mr Bryant. Following the review stage, Mr Bryant will confirm pupil enrolmentin a letter sent via email to parents by 5pm on the evening of Monday 5th September 2016. Courses will commence on Wednesday 7th September 2016.

In the meantime, I would like to wish your child every success in the GCSE examinations.

Yours faithfully

M Sexton
