Six-Step Approach

A Village in India- Chembakolli.

Key Question 1: Where in the world are Asia, India and Chembakolli?

·  Play continent/ country/ city? Name places and have the children state which it is.

·  Ask them about India. Continent/ country/ city?

·  Do they know which continent India is on?

·  Children to find India in atlas, using index and grid references. They should trace the outline of the country. Briefly discuss the size of India in comparison to other countries surrounding it.

·  Ask them to mark on 2 places in India that are named on the map. Do they think they are cities?

·  Show them the detailed map of India and ask them what some of the smaller places might be (villages)

·  Locate Chembakolli and ask them to mark it onto their map.

EXT- Which seas border India? List other place names in India.

Key Question 2: What are the similarities and differences between village and city life in India?

·  Remind the children that our focus is India, in particular Chembakolli which is a village in India.

·  Show them a range of photos from the photo packs and ask them to discuss in groups which ones they think are Chembakolli (reinforcing that it is a village!)

·  Give small groups 2 or 4 photos and ask them to discuss what the photo shows and then decide which are city/ village and to discuss why.

·  Discuss/ share as a class which photos are Chembakolli village and which are Bangalore city what they show.

·  Give groups copies of the maps of Chembakolli and Bangalore. Ask them to compare and contrast the locations and surroundings.

Key Question 3: What can you find out about the weather and climate in India?

·  Access the internet (BBC News?) and show the children the temperature in England today. Ask the children to predict what they think the temperature may be in India today. Allow them to suggest place names to type in and discover the answer as a team.

·  Show the weather in India Climate PowerPoint (Iffat Sardharwalla, Primary Resources) discussing climate and the monsoon season.

·  During PowerPoint display the season cycle diagram showing the months visually.

·  In small groups children to record their ideas of what they think could be the advantages and disadvantages of the monsoon season.

·  Share some main points with them about crops during monsoon season.

·  Share some of these back and discuss further.

·  Set ‘UK and India how does the weather compare?’ as homework this week.

Key Question 4: What crops are produced in Chembakolli?

·  Show again photos 1-3 from photo pack of the Chembakolli landscape and ask children to discuss what they have found out for far about how the landscape is good for farming.

·  Explain we will be learning about the crops the people grow in Chembakolli today and show the PowerPoint ‘Crops in Chembakolli’ from Primary resources.

·  Give children a copy of pages 20-21 of ‘Village Life in India’. Ask them to read more about crops, or read through it as a class.

·  Children should then use their knowledge of the different cash crops and food crops and record using a method of their choice i.e. list format, picture, poster,

·  EXT- do the challenge question on page 21 to work out the profit a rich farmer made on his ginger crop.

·  Set up opportunities for the children to try banana, coconut, papaya, pineapple and mango.

Key question 5: What is the working day like for a person in India?

·  As a class, thought shower what the children think the main jobs in Chembakolli would be.

·  Activity 1- Split the class into groups of 4, giving them a pack of 4 sheets (‘One of my jobs’, ‘Boys jobs’, ‘Mothers jobs’, ‘Men’s jobs’). They should choose one to read each and study the photos and then take turns to explain the jobs to the rest of their group.

·  Activity 2- A Day in the Life of Chandra. Give small groups an envelope with the timings and activities of Chandra. Get them to firstly put them in order and then to decide which card seems the most different from life in England.
