7. Narrative Description
This recently vacated farmstead consists of a house and a barn. The barn was recorded because from initial assessment it appeared to have potential to be a remnant Early Settlement Era banked/basement barn. However, when the intensive survey was conducted it was found that the barn was probably built c.1900. It is a side-gabled banked/basement barn with limestone foundation and vertical board and batten siding. The roofing material is wood shingles that area nearly blown away at this point. The construction of the barn was found to be heavy timber frame but using sawn posts and beams and likely dating from the time when the extant house was built (i.e., c.1900). There is a stone and earthen ramp on the west side of the barn for entry to the upper level. The bent configuration shows two vertical posts with cross beams and braced rafters. The entire south end of the barn is in a state of collapse, the barn having been recently badly damaged in a wind storm. Collapse of the entire barn is imminent, although it will likely be torn down before that occurs.
8. Statement of Significance
This property is located in the SE1/4 of Section 2 of Fairfax Township and consists of a two-story c.1890-1900 house and what was initially suspected as having been a good example of a pre-1870 heavy timber frame banked/basement barn with side-gabled/ramped entry. Closer inspection of the barn revealed, however, that while it is a heavy timber frame banked/basement barn with side-gabled ramped entry, the interior construction revealed sawn posts and beams and the indication that the barn was built after 1870 rather that before that date. It may even have been built as late as the 1890s-c.1900 and could be contemporaneous in construction with the extant house. As such, its initial association with early pioneer, John Listebarger (or Lichtebarger), appears to be too early for the extant barn. Map data show that while there was a house shown at this location on the 1859 and 1869 maps when Listebarger was owner, the property was owned by Clara Beebe by 1895 and Frank Beebe by 1906 during the period when the house and this barn appear to have been built (Bergendahl 1895; Iowa Publishing 1906; McWilliams and Thompson 1859; Thompson and Everts 1869). The barn was badly damaged in a recent windstorm and is in a state of collapse. It will either fall down or be torn down in the near future. The house, while currently unoccupied is supposed to remain standing. The late construction of this barn and house indicate that neither is eligible for the National Register under the Early Settlement Era context. The imminent loss of the barn will further damage any eligibility for this property under later historic contexts. As such, it is concluded that the Beebe barn and house are ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
