1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Deliver, store and handle steel joists as recommended in SJI "Specifications". Handle and store joists in a manner to avoid deforming members and to avoid excessive stresses.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

A. Steel: Comply with SJI "Specifications".

1. Steel to contain high-recycled-content steel; minimum of 90% material (75% of post-consumer steel).

B. Unfinished Threaded Fasteners: ASTM A 307, Grade A, regular hexagon type, low carbon steel.

C. High strength threaded ASTM A325, heavy hex bolts and nuts with hardened washers.

D. Steel Prime Paint: Comply with SJI Specifications for red iron oxide alkyd primer (without lead) type paint. Perimeter fasteners shall be hot dip zinc coated as per ASTM A 153/A 153M, Class C.

2.02 FABRICATION

A. General: Fabricate steel joists in accordance with SJI "Specification".

1. K-series steel joists.

B. Bridging: Provide horizontal or diagonal type bridging for joists and joist girders, complying with SJI "Specifications".

C. Provide bridging anchors for ends of bridging lines terminating at walls or beams.

D. Steel Bearing Plates: ASTM A 36/A 36M.

E. Provide miscellaneous accessories, including splice plates and bolts required by joist manufacturer to complete installation.

2.03 END ANCHORAGE

A. Provide end anchorages including bearing plates, to secure joists to adjacent construction, complying with SJI "Specifications", unless otherwise indicated.

B. Equip bearing ends of joists with manufacturer’s standard beveled ends or sloped shoes if joist slope exceeds ¼ inch (6.35mm) per 12 inches(25mm).

2.04 SHOP PAINTING

A. Remove loose scale, heavy rust, and other foreign materials from fabricated joists and accessories before application of shop paint.

B. Apply one shop coat of steel prime paint to joists and accessories, by spray, dipping, or other method to provide a continuous dry paint film thickness of not less than 1 mil (0.025mm).

1. Do not shop paint joists to receive spray-on fireproofing unless fireproofing will be applied to a screen mesh affixed to the joists.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Examine supporting substrates, embedded bearing plates, and abutting structural framing for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance.

B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.02 ERECTION

A. Place and secure steel joists in accordance with SJI "Specifications", final shop drawings, and as herein specified.

B. Anchors: Furnish anchor bolts, bearing plates, and other devices to be built into concrete and masonry construction.

C. Placing Joists: Do not start placement of steel joists until supporting work is in place and secured. Place joists on supporting work, adjust and align in accurate locations and spacing before permanently fastening.

D. Provide temporary bridging, connections, and anchors to ensure lateral stability during construction.

E. Bridging: Install bridging simultaneously with joist erection, before construction loads are applied. Anchor ends of bridging lines at top and bottom chords where terminating at walls or beams.

F. Install joists and accessories plumb, square, and true to line; securely fasten to supporting construction according to SJI's "Specifications," joist manufacturer's written recommendations, and requirements in this Section.

1. Before installation, splice joists delivered to Project site in more than one piece.

2. Space, adjust, and align joists accurately in location before permanently fastening.

3. Install temporary bracing and erection bridging, connections, and anchors to ensure that joists are stabilized during construction.

4. Delay rigidly connecting bottom-chord extensions to columns or supports until dead loads have been applied.

Field weld joists to supporting steel bearing plates.

G. Coordinate welding sequence and procedure with placement of joists. Comply with AWS requirements and procedures for welding, appearance and quality of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work.

H. Where required to be bolted, bolt joists to supporting steel framework using high-strength structural bolts. Comply with RCSC's "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTMA325 or ASTMA490 Bolts" for high-strength structural bolt installation and tightening requirements.

I. Install and connect bridging concurrently with joist erection, before construction loads are applied. Anchor ends of bridging lines at top and bottom chords if terminating at walls or beams.

3.02 FASTENING JOISTS

A. Except where required to be bolted, field weld joists to supporting steel framework in accordance with SJI "Specifications" for type of joists used. Coordinate welding sequence and procedure with placing of joists.

B. Secure joists resting on masonry or concrete bearing surfaces by bedding in mortar and anchoring to masonry or concrete construction as shown on drawings.

1. Provide pockets in existing masonry walls where required.

3.03 TOUCHUP PAINTING

A. After joists installation, paint field bolt heads and nuts, and welded areas, abraded or rusty surfaces on joists and steel supporting members. Wire brush surfaces as per SSPC-SP-2 and clean with solvent before painting. Use same type of paint as used for shop painting.
