Duke of Edinburgh Award at Andover Baptist Church 2015/16

Dear Parent/Guardian

AndoverBaptistChurchas part of the Church’s youth work and in co-ordination with Hampshire County Councilruns an open Duke of Edinburgh Award Centre.

We have been operating as a centre for 5 years we will be running in 2015/16Bronze, Silver and Gold programs.

Why do your Duke of Edinburgh award?

  • As leaders we see young people transformed and become confident and believing in themselves
  • We see them develop team skills that will last them a life time in all areas of their life
  • The young people leave the scheme with the skills to plan walking, canoeing and camping trips anywhere in the country and be safe
  • Employers see D of E on young peoples CVs and know what it stands for
  • If you do your Gold they go to the Palace

For Bronze you need to be 14+, minimum year 10.

For Silver you need to be 15+, minimum year 11.

For Gold yon need to be 16+, minimum year 12.

We design all the programmes so that it does not impact onto the young person’s exams.

The Bronze and Silver DofE programme have 4 sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. For Gold there is the addition of a Residential.

The mode of transport will be walking for Bronze and Silver in 2015/16 with the practice and final expeditions for Bronze in the New Forest and Silver in Exmore and Dartmoor respectively. For Gold the mode of transport will be canoeing with practice on the River Severn and final on the River Wye.

The group meets every other Monday starting in September 2015, 19:00 till 21:00 at Andover Baptist Church on Charlton Road.

The fees are:

Bronze £140

Silver £285

Gold £399 – which includes a canoeing course

The fees include registration for the award and access to tents, cookers, gas, ruck sacks (walking) or 60 litre dry bags/barrels (canoeing), camping fees, transport and assessor’s fees. We do not want money to be a barrier and stop anyone from doing the award, so if money is difficult please contact me and we will work with you to apply for grants.

. The young people will be expected to provide the following:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping mat
  • Walking boots or canoeing shoes
  • Waterproof coat and trouser
  • Thermals/Fleece
  • Expedition food of their choice

When you apply you need to complete the application formand in September we will be asking you to sign an agreement with the award center stating that you can make the published dates for weekends and practice days, we cannot send the young people for assessment if they have not completed their training.

We run four groups at Bronze, 28 young people, three groups at Silver, 21 young people and two groups at Gold, 16 young people. So there are limited places and we give priority to the Silver and Gold programs to young people who have done the previous award with us.
