SILENCE & SOLITUDE

Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in all the earth.”

Today we seem to have a lot of distractions in our life that keep us from spending time with God in His word as well as in prayer. We know that these distractions exist and we know that we need to make an effort to get into the scriptures, but how do we do it, how do we make time in our busy schedule to spend time alone with God? First we have to see the benefit of silence, silence from the loudness of life, school, video games, social media, etc. Getting away from those distractions can allow you to think clearly, hear from God through His word, as well as relieve stress. Sometimes when we let everything that hinders us fall of we will become more productive, more positive, and grow more in our faith. Second we need to turn off the distractions. One of the biggest distractions is our phones or music players; they have everything we need, from alarms all the way to games and social media. We need to see that those are great avenues to be in touch with others as well as use them for the benefit of ministry, however too much of a good thing can still be a distraction from you walk with Christ. Third we have to be intentional in setting time aside from all the distractions we talked about earlier and spend time reading the word of God as well as spending intentional time in prayer. You cannot grow in a relationship without talking to the other person in the relationship, this is why prayer is so important, God is there for us he waits and listens to our heart no matter how bad things are he is waiting to hear from you. Then spending time reading Gods word allows God to communicate to you not only His love but how you can grow yourself. Time alone is so important that there is a Hebrew word used in the psalms pronounced “Selah” This is a musical term meaning pause for reflection, God used this intentionally where those reading these praises and songs would pause and reflect on what was just said, we need to take that time to pause and reflect as well.

  1. What are some distractions that hinder you from spending time with God?
  2. Why is spending time together important for a relationship?
  3. Why don’t we spend more time with God to grow our relationship with Him?
  4. What time is best to do your quiet time with God?
  5. Will you make a conscious effort to start reading your bible and praying daily? If so how is that going to look?
