Pressrelease07 Oct 2015

Arnhem, October 7, 2015– Every year many hundreds of thousands of Dutch join the Warmsweaterdaywith the slogan :“the greenest energy is the energy you do not use”. On this national day of energysaving people turn their heaters down at least one degree Celciusand thus save, by grade, 6% energy. The sweater symbolizes what you can do yourself to reduce greenhousegas emissions. On the Day of Sustainability, this year on October 9th, the organizers, Climate Alliance Netherlands and energyproviderGreenchoice, put the counters back to zero and are invitingpeople to take part in the tenth anniversary of the Warmetruiendag, celebrated this year on Friday 5 February 2016.

CO2

Since 2012 all the participants of the Warm Sweaterday have been registered. Up until now 703.409 Dutch people have taken part. Many supporters put on a warm sweater the last years; Disney’s Donald Duck, Princess Laurentien, along with many other Dutch famous ambassadors, primary schools, municipalities, provinces and companies. This is vital because Netherlands dangles at the bottom of the European lists with regards to renewable energy and also spends about a quarter of the total national energy use in the heating and cooling of buildings. The Warmsweaterday is also a symbol for "do it yourself" and "working together" and save energy in order to limit CO2 emissions. That this works, the figures show: if all of usturn the heating down a notch on this daywe reduce the annual energy consumption of the Dutch islands Vlieland, Terschelling and Schiermonnikoog together. If we do this every day in the winter season thatadds up to the total energy use of Amsterdam for a year!

Tackle the climate problem with fashion

Especially for Warmsweaterday a sweater is designed that you can knit yourself (“de Trui Van 2016”). The pattern is availablefor free on the website ( Together with fashion designers, product designers and scientists,Warmsweaterday looks for ways to keep yourselfwarm (personal thermoregulation), and thus reduce the emission of greenhouse gases considerably. The slogan here is: use the power of fashion for saving energy! This year’s sweater is designed by innovative knitwear designer Carolien Evers (BedtimeforBonzo.nl). She used two sorts of bulky wool and looked carefully at nature, the construction from bees inspirated her to use a voluminous bee stitch. This sweater will keep you very warm. The design was presented during the opening event of the Dutch Sustainable Fashion Week on Thursday, October 8th at The College Hotel in Amsterdam. On Friday 9 and Saturday 10 Octoberthe sweater wasin the spotlight at the Strawberry Earth Festival in Amsterdam. Warmsweaterday organized the "Makerslab" together with developers of new wool from old sweaters (Wool2 from Creative City Lab).

International appreciation for the Greenchoice warmetruiendag

The Greenchoice Warmsweaterday receivedan international awardfor the second time. Last year, the initiative was awarded with the second place in the Sustainable Energy Europe Awards. This year, the prestigious National Energy Globe Award from the Energy Globe Foundation was horoured to the Warmsweaterday.

Energy saving: the greenest energy is the energy you do not use

Energy savings doesn’t get the attention it deservesin the current national energy policy.. This is a missed opportunity. Globally, we can save up to 70% energy if we apply the knowledge we have now. Climate Alliance Netherlands, has been organizing the Warmetruiendag since 2007. The initiative was set up to increase attention for the Kyoto Protocol, the international treaty to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy provider Greenchoice supports Warmetruiendag since 2013. Greenchoice aims to create a cleaner world through frugal and smart with energy to go and use only energy that we generate together from solar, wind and other natural sources.
