Show Me Nutrition Education Displays (SMNED) Guidance

Use of SMNED in schools

The Show Me Nutrition Education Displays are designed to reach teachers and school staff. Teachers will take the information into the classroom and share with their students. With these exhibits we are “training trainers” to deliver good nutrition messages. SMNED often incorporated as part of school’s wellness policies.

Teacher lounges, etc.

·  Traditional way the displays have been delivered. Each display topic is usually placed in a school for one month.

o  NPA leaves display and school handouts at school.

o  Publication numbers for posters and handouts available on the share drive at: S:\MUCampus\HES\FNEP\Alternative delivery & special projects\Displays\SMNED\Publications numbers

·  Do not duplicate displays-displays used in other delivery approaches cannot be used at another time during the same school year (including school health fairs, Food Power, notebooks).

SMNED Teacher Notebooks

·  NPA drops off notebook to school staff and leaves for a period of time (recommended time: one month). Notebook is to be passed around by school staff.

·  NPA picks up notebook at end of designated period of time.

·  No more than 4 displays in a notebook.

·  No more than one notebook to be used in a school at a time.

·  Use graphic cover sheets available on Share drive.

·  Each display topic section should include the following:

o  Instruction sheet (with graphics) for school staff

o  Mini version of display poster (color copy)

o  Supply of 4-page handouts from Publications for that display

·  Do not duplicate displays-displays used in notebooks cannot be used at another time during the same school year (teacher lounges, school staff health fairs, Food Power).

o  Can use tracking form

·  Forms (Mini posters, cover sheets, instructions, tracking form, etc.) found on share drive at S:\MUCampus\HES\FNEP\Alternative delivery & special projects\Displays\SMNED\Notebook versions

Reporting: Use the Indirect Program Information Form (N------) to report.

·  Use one PIF per display topic.

·  List SMNED-Topic. Use titles listed on FNEP website.

·  Only teacher numbers need to be reported. Other school staff (nurses, librarians, etc.) do not need to be reported. Get school teacher numbers from the school for reporting purposes.

Use of SMNED in Food Power

• Use only SMNED displays that align with Food Power topics:

O Drink to your Health

• No more than 2 displays may be showcased during Food Power exhibit.

• Display should be manned by NPA. This is also a good opportunity to answer questions or

market our other programs if we don’t have an FNEP presence in the school.

• Displays used in Food Power cannot be used at another time during the same school year.

Reporting: Do NOT use Program Information Form (N525) to report. All numbers should be captured through the Food Power Program Information Form.
