ACTION

Subject:FACULTY SABBATICAL LEAVES, 2006-2007

Background:

The July 1, 2004-2007 Agreement By and Between the Shoreline Community College Board of Trustees, District VII and the Shoreline Community College Federation of Teachers (Article XIII: Leaves) states that the College may award annual sabbatical leaves to eligible faculty not to exceed four percent of the total number of full-time faculty. For the 2006-2007 academic year a total of eighteen (18) quarters of sabbatical leave is being recommended. All faculty recommended are eligible for a sabbatical leave, and the faculty Sabbatical Selection Committee has complied with the provisions of Article XIII: Leaves of the 2004-2007Agreement.

Eleven sabbatical applications were submitted for consideration to the faculty Sabbatical Selection Committee, chaired by Professor Molly Morse. Following the Committee's review of the written applications and applicant interviews, eight proposals are attached for the Board's review. The Committee recommended full year (three quarters) sabbatical leave for four faculty members at 86% compensation, two quarters sabbatical leave for two faculty member at 86% compensation, and one quarter sabbatical leave for two faculty members at 100%.

Purpose:To create and prepare a 3-5 credit Psychology class in death and dying as well as a Continuing Education course on death and related subjects for the larger community based on the results of a needs assessment.

Purpose:To train as a volunteer Program Evaluator to the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, participate in professional workshops and national conferences, resume active participation with the Immunization Action Coalition of Washington, and to update computer skills for educational and classroom application as well as become more familiar with systems for computerized patient records.

Purpose:To continue revision of poetry manuscript Revolt of a Hobo’s Daughter for publishing and to research and complete a new manuscript of creative non-fiction that blends philosophical analysis with storytelling.

Purpose:To revise History curriculum and renew course materials, study in depth History teaching field, bring knowledge up-to-date with recent research of Political Science and International Studies teaching fields, improve skills in FrontPage, a current web editing program, to move collection of links and lab assignments for 14 classes to FrontPage; convert slides and transparency images to digital images.

Purpose:To gather data from police databases and the National Institute of Justice database in Washington DC to test and validate Dr. Marcus Rogers’ preliminary taxonomy based on historical research on classifying hackers and the self-reported hierarchy found in the hacking community, which will result in co-authored papers and a database which could be used to further criminal profiling work.

Recommendation:

It is recommended that sabbatical leaves be granted to Fred Kuczmarski, Linda Barnes, Linda Warren and Terry Taylor for three quarters each during the 2006-2007 academic year at 86% compensation; to Donna Biscay and Bruce McCutcheon for two quarters during the 2006-2007 academic year at 86% compensation; and to Diana Knauf and Russell Rosco for one quarter during the 2006-2007 academic year at 100% compensation.
