Shelving and Stack Maintenance

  1. Shelving

Returning library material to its proper locations for future use is one of the most

important tasks in the library. Library materials are checked-in via the automated

Circulation System. After check-in they are separated into Adult and Children’s status and then sorted by broad categories. Materials are arranged on shelving carts to be returned to their proper location. The ideal turn-around time for shelving of returned materials is 4 hours.

  1. Adult Materials / Young Adult Materials
  1. Fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. Special shelving areas for fiction are:

a). New fiction and McNaughton rental fiction

b). Mysteries

c). Science Fiction

d). Westerns

e). Story Collection

f). Large Print

g) Christmas

  1. Nonfiction books are arranged by Dewey decimal / Cutter number. Books with

the same number are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name. Special

shelving areas for nonfiction are:

a). Reference – do not circulate

b). New nonfiction and McNaughton rental nonfiction

c.) Biographies- arranged alphabetically by the last name of the person they are

written about. Books written about the same person are arranged

alphabetically by the author’s last name.

d). Oversize

e). Quarto

f.) Large Print

g). Christmas

  1. Periodicals are arranged alphabetically by title

a.)Current issues are displayed on sloping periodical shelves.

b.)Issues for the previous 12 months of each title are placed on flat shelves underneath current issue of same title.

c.)Back issues are shelved alphabetically by title and chronologically within each title in a separate area.

d.)Magazines/periodicals received free or as gifts are in the wooden racks located near the periodical display.

e.)Newspapers are kept for current month, except for the Daily Legal News and the Trumbull Co. Legal News which are kept for 3 months.

f.)Hubbard News, Soaring Eagle, Hubbard Review, and the Hubbard Press are kept behind the Reference /Information desk. An extra copy of each (for microfilming purposes) is kept in Reference storage room. Issues are held for one year and then sent to be microfilmed.

4. Fiction Paperbacks are shelved alphabetically by author and are arranged on

towers and racks. Oversized paperbacks (OPB) are shelved separately.

  1. Music CD’s are arranged by the standard ANSCR classification system .
  1. Books on CD and supplemental material on CD’s are arranged by Dewey/Cutter

number.

  1. Audiocassettess (CAS) and Young Adult audiocassettes (YAC) are arranged by Dewey/Cutter number.

9. Videos/DVD’s are separated into two categories: Entertainment and Educational.

They are arranged on the shelf by Dewey/Cutter number.

10. Reference pamphlets pertaining to the history of Hubbard are shelved in pamphlet

boxes at the Reference/Information desk.

11. Microfilm is arranged chronologically within each title in metal microfiche

Cabinets in Reference office.

B. Children’s Department

  1. Picture books (E) are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.
  1. Beginning readers (ICR) are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.
  1. Fiction books (J) are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.
  1. Easy Fiction (JE) are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.
  1. Nonfiction books are arranged by Dewey/Cutter number. Special shelving areas for nonfiction are:

a.)Fairy tales and legends

b.)Biographies – arranged alphabetically by the last name of the person they are written about. Books written about the same person are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name.

c.)Reference books are arranged by Dewey/Cutter number.

  1. Holiday books are shelved in a separate area. They are arranged chronologically

according to the holiday they are written about. Within each holiday section, books are arranged in this order:

a.)Nonfiction (by number)

b.)Fiction (by author)

c.)Easy and picture books (by author)

  1. Paperbacks are shelved on display racks and arranged by series when possible.
  1. Periodicals are arranged alphabetically by title on magazine display shelves.

Current issue is displayed on sloping shelf.

  1. “Adult use” and Dr. Powers Memorial books are shelved in special (JAU) area;

Nonfiction by Dewey/Cutter number and Fiction by author.

  1. Books on Tape (JC) are arranged alphabetically by title.
  1. Book and cassette kits (JBC) are hung on display rack by type.

12. Cake pans are shelved in cabinet, alphabetically by name/title.
