Sheep and Goat Record Keeping Guidelines

  1. All sheep and goats transported or sold in the State of Oklahoma are required to have official ID. Official id consists of the following, an officially recognized tag, or registered tattoo and individual animal ID. Individual states have different requirements check for the requirements before moving animals across state lines.
  2. Records must be kept for 5 years on all sheep and goats purchased, acquired, sold or disposed of.
  3. Records must contain the following information. This section applies to animals that are born on your premise. Tags can be recorded for each individual animal or animals can be grouped. For example all animals born in one month can be tagged and that group can be listed in the record keeping as tagged MM/DD/YYYY; the number of animals you tag; Premise ID and the serial (tag) numbers, for example you are tagging 20 head of goats the tags would be listed as Premise OK000001 and the tags would be OKK12345-OKK12364; list your name and address. Premise ID and name and address could be listed at the top of each sheet. A sample template is enclosed. If you plan to retain some of the animals for replacement breeding stock it is recommended that they be tagged with a separate series of tags as all animals that are sold must also have their tags and information recorded.
  1. The date the animals were officially identified;
  2. The number of sheep and or goats identified;
  3. The premise number and serial (tag) numbers applied;
  4. The name and address of the owner of the flock of birth;
  1. If you purchase animals from other individuals or markets, those animals may or may not be tagged. All animals are required to be tagged.
  1. Preexisting tags are not required to be recorded but it is encouraged.
  2. Animals that lose their official ID may be retagged, provided that the flock of origin information is recorded along with the new ID information.
  3. If you purchase or acquire animals you are required to retain sale receipts, invoices, any record of sale for 5 years.

Additional information required when purchasing animals.

  1. The number of animals purchased or acquired;
  2. The date of purchase or acquisition;
  3. The name and address of the person who you buy the animals from or the market;
  4. Certificate of Veterinary Inspection or any other associated health papers.
  1. Veterinarians, dealers, and markets are required to follow the same record keeping requirements as stated in number 3 above.
  2. When selling or disposing of animals these records must be maintained.
  1. The number of animals sold or disposed of;
  2. The date of sale;
  3. The name and address of the buyer or person who you sold the animals to, or the market where sold.
