SHAW FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP IN LAW

(FIVE YEARS, FIXED-TERM)

FURTHER PARTICULARS

Lincoln College invites applications from graduates, either men or women, for a five-year fixed-term Shaw Foundation Fellowship in Law with effect from 1st September 2014 to 31st August 2019. This Fellowship is funded by the generosity of the Shaw Foundation in Singapore.

About Lincoln College

Lincoln is one of the oldest Oxford Colleges with fine historic buildings located in the centre of the City of Oxford. It has a strong sense of collegiality with a reputation for integrating its graduate and undergraduate students in a highly successful traditional community. There are currently 38 permanent, and 10 fixed-term, Fellows of whom 28 are also College Tutors responsible for teaching and the welfare of students. About 92 undergraduates and 120 graduates, in a wide range of subjects, are admitted to Lincoln each year and over 600 are in residence at any one time. In recent years the College has figured consistently in the top ten ranking of all Colleges for their academic performance in Final Examinations.

Law at Lincoln College

Lincoln currently admits an average of eight undergraduates per annum to read for the BA in Jurisprudence (Law). There are currently three Fellows involved in teaching this school: Professor Simon Gardner and Professor Stefan Enchelmaier, who hold permanent posts, and Dr Noam Gur, the outgoing Shaw Foundation Fellow. The College has a significant cohort of graduate students in Law. Each year 10-12 students are admitted to read for the Oxford Law Faculty’s various Master’s degrees, and a further number of students (currently 10) are reading for the research degrees of MPhil and DPhil.

Further information about the College can be obtained from

Teaching and other Duties for the College

The duties of the Shaw Foundation Fellow shall include the pursuit of original research, teaching, and participation in the governance and administrative work of the College, under the By-Laws of Lincoln College. The Shaw Foundation Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body of the College. He or she will also be required to lead the College’s Academic Outreach programme to Singapore. In recognition of this commitment to international outreach the Fellow will not be required to undertake any other administrative roles in College.

Teaching and associated administration: The Fellow will be required to provide 6 hours per week of teaching averaged over the three eight-week terms of the academic year. He or she will be required to assist generally in the organisation of Law teaching in the College, in the supervision of students, including setting and marking Collections (termly College examinations), and will also be expected to participate in the annual undergraduate admissions exercise in December each year.

The Shaw Foundation Fellow will be expected to give tutorial teaching for Lincoln College students in any two of the Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, and Jurisprudence papers for the Oxford University BA in Jurisprudence. But this requirement will probably not exhaust his or her 6 hour stint, so there should be time to undertake additional teaching besides. Subject to discussion with the College’s permanent Law Fellows, this could take the form of teaching the same two subjects for other colleges, and/or giving tutorials, seminars or lectures in a further paper from one of the Oxford Law Faculty undergraduate or graduate degree programmes, whether to Lincoln College students or others. (Further details of these programmes may be found at Candidates should state in their application which two of the three named papers they will be ready to teach, and indicate any other paper(s) they would be interested in teaching.

The Fellow may also act as (non-teaching) College Advisor to a limited number of post-graduate students in Law in the College. An additional payment will be made in respect of this role.

Outreach work: The Shaw Foundation Fellow will be expected to act as a point of contact for key schools, universities and educational agencies in Singapore and to provide advice and information on opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate study in the University of Oxford in all subjects. No prior knowledge of the Singaporean context is required and the Fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in other parts of the collegiate university similarly engaged in encouraging relationships between Oxford and Singapore. The Fellow is expected to visit Singapore from time to time to promote this work. He or she will work with the College in developing these outreach visits and will be able to benefit from the presence of a strong network of Lincoln alumni in Singapore.

Criteria for Appointment

The successful candidate will normally be someone in the early stages of an academic career and applicants will normally have recently obtained, or be about to obtain, a Doctorate in Law. Consideration will be given to potential in teaching and research, and ability to engage in academic outreach work.

Stipend and Allowances

The salary offered currently ranges from £30,728 p.a. to £34,565.This corresponds to points 30-34 on the national scale for university lecturers. Appointment to a point on the scale is made on the basis of experience.

The Fellow may be offered single-person accommodation in College, if available, at a subsidised rent . If the Fellow lives out of College, the use of a teaching room will be provided.

The Fellow is entitled to full common room rights, including free lunch and dinner; to draw on the Fellows’ Research and Equipment Funds (which includes the purchase of books) and which currently stands at £1,582; a hospitality credit currently £475; and to some secretarial assistance to help with his or her academic work. The Fellow will be offered membership of USS pension scheme and may elect to join the College’s group private health insurance scheme (BUPA).

The College will contribute to reasonable removal expenses consequent upon appointment.

Terms of Employment: Probation and Sabbatical Leave

Under the College Statutes, elections to Fellowships are for a probationary year in the first instance, and a probationary review covering all aspects of the postholder’s duties will take place at this point.Thereafter, the Shaw Foundation Fellowship will be tenable for a further four years and will not be renewable. It is one of a limited number of such fixed-term posts, intended to provide a career development opportunity for people aspiring to an academic career. The appointment therefore carries with it no commitment to a subsequent career appointment within the College.

The Shaw Foundation Fellow will be entitled to sabbatical leave subject to the provisions of the College By-Laws.

This appointment is subject to the receipt of a satisfactory medical questionnaire and, if necessary, a subsequent medical examination by a Doctor appointed by Lincoln College.
