Sunday of the Passion / Palm Sunday

ELW Setting 10

(Mark 1 to 13 is being read aloud beginning at 8:00 a.m.) (Palms will then be distributed in the Gathering Space)

On this day we hear of Christ emptying himself of divine power and protection, willingly becoming vulnerable to those who struck him and put him to death. With Christ we lament his suffering and all human suffering, but expect God’s final vindication. Mark’s passion story begins with an unnamed woman anointing his head, perhaps to proclaim him Messiah, and Jesus saying she has anointed him beforehand for burial. Mark’s Easter story will begin with women going to anoint Jesus for burial, only to find that he has been raised, God’s living Anointed One.

Gathering

8am: Reading of Mark;9am: Processional Liturgy

(In the Gathering Space after Palms are distributed)

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Today’s Processional Gospel reading is Matthew, Chapter 21, verses 1-11.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Processional Gospel: Matthew 21:1-11

1When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. 3If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately.” 4This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying,

Tell the daughter of Zion:

Look, your king is coming to you,

humble, and mounted on a donkey,

and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

6The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; 7they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. 8A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!

“Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

10When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” 11The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”

The gospel of our Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ!

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray. We praise you, O God, for redeeming the world through our Savior Jesus Christ.

Today he entered the holy city in triumph and was proclaimed messiah and king by those who spread garments and branches along his way.

Bless these branches and those who carry them.

Grant us grace to follow our Lord in the way of the cross, so that, joined to his death and resurrection, we enter into life with you.

We pray this through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Hymn“All Glory, Laud, and Honor”#344

Refrain: All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer, king… to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.

2. The company of angels are praising you on high; creation and all mortals in chorus make reply. Refrain

3. The multitude of pilgrims with palms before you went. Our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present. Refrain

4. To you, before your passion, they sang their hymns of praise. To you, now high exalted, our melody we raise. Refrain

Refrain: All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer, king,to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.

5. Their praises you accepted; accept the prayers we bring, great author of all goodness, O good and gracious king. Refrain

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

As we now enter into the contemplation of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ and meditate on the salvation of the world through his sufferings, death, burial, and resurrection, let us pray… Everlasting God,

in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross.

In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection.

This we pray, in the name of our Lord Jesus, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Word

Children’s Message– Hosanna/Sunday School

Psalm 31:9-16 (Refrain below follows each verse)

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble;

my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat and my belly.

For my life is wasted with grief, and my years with sighing;

my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones are consumed. R

I am the scorn of my enemies, a disgrace to my neighbors, a dismay to my acquaintances;

when they see me in the street they avoid me.

Like the dead I am forgotten, out of mind;

I am as useless as a broken pot.R

For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is all around;

they put their heads together against me; they plot to take my life.

But as for me, I have trusted in you, O Lord.

I have said, “You are my God.R

My times are in your hand;

rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me.

Let your face shine upon your servant;

save me in your steadfast love.”R

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers

Hear our prayer.

Offering/Holy Baptism – Damon Randall Erskine

Offertory Hymn (Music notation at end of bulletin)

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with your free Spirit.

Offertory Prayer

Let us pray together… Merciful God,

receive the sacrifice of our praise and thanksgiving and the offering of our lives, that following in the way of the cross, we may know the joy of the resurrection; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Preface

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ.

You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that, renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace.

And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Sanctus (Holy)#190

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow'r and might,

holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow'r and might,

heaven and earth are full, full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

Words of Institution, Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Distribution

Return to God with all your heart.

Receive bread for the journey, drink for the desert.

All the baptized people of God are invited to the table and are invited to be part of the sharing of bread and wine as we proclaim Christ’s presence among us and within each of us.

Blessing, Prayer

Let us pray together…

Compassionate God, you have fed us with the bread of heaven. Sustain us in our Lenten pilgrimage: may our fasting be hunger for justice, our alms, a making of peace, and our prayer, the song of grateful hearts; through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Sending

Blessing

May God who has called us forth from the dust of the earth, and claimed us as children of the light, strengthen you on your journey into life renewed.

The Lord bless you and keep you;

the Lord’s face shine upon you with grace and mercy;

the Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace, in the name in which we baptize: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Amen.
