Dear Parents and Students:
Welcome to Sedgwick Middle School’s 8th grade Technology and Engineering program. This guide will help familiarize you with what we will be learning in Communication Technology this school year. Please take a moment to read this guide, and then sign the bottom of the second page for your child to return to class. If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns, feel free to contact me at the above phone number or e-mail address. Course Description
Communication Technology students will understand and be able to effectively apply learned knowledge and skills to solve problems involving information and communication technologies.Working in both groups and individually, students will complete projects that address real-world problems in the following units: architecture design, graphic design, digital photography,career awareness, introduction to programming, and video production. Students will use the principles of design and the engineering design process to solve various challenges and be guided on productively communicating at personal and team levels. Apple computers will be used for applications to complete projects in the units. Career awareness is emphasized through the use of a daily “Journal” and also research on a career choice. Throughout the year, reading, writing, and math will be stressed in order to promote higher level thinking skills, and the connection to other learning areas.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this class, students will:
Create messages through visual and audio visual communication.
Develop abilities to apply the design process.
Apply problem solving skills and critical thinking skills through individual and group projects.
Collaborate to enhance experiential learning and communication in a diverse environment.
Become aware of the world of work and its expectations and requirements.
Demonstrate the responsible use of computers, printers, and video & digital cameras.
Develop an understanding of and be able to select and use communication technologies.

Make up Work
Make up work for any reason is the responsibility of the student. Work missed due to absence from class for any reason is to be made up within the rotations timeframe.
Academic Integrity
Students are expected to work sometimes cooperatively and sometimes alone. Academic integrity means being honest about doing and submitting one’s own work.
After School Help
I am available to provide additional help to students during learning lab (with a pass)and after school every Thursday and Friday. Additional timeframes can be discussed with me to meet your needs as well.
