THE TURABIAN STYLE

1)Introduction

In Response Paper 3, I began the study of Turabian style. Turabian style was drawn from manual for writers of research papers. The Turabian / Chicago stylebook is a valuable resource to help researchers in formulating and writing scholarly articles in organized way (Turabian 2013, 10). The book first portion aims to builds the researcher’s knowledge of the research writing and argument. The book second portion illustrated the Chicago style in source citation.

2)TheTurabian Styles

Two citation methods can be recognized: bibliography and reference list. The bibliography method uses notes (endnotes or footnotes) and a bibliography. The reference list method uses parenthetical citations and a bibliography. The Notes-Bibliography (NB) method is usually used in literature, arts, and the history. The Author-Date method is preferred in the social, physical, and natural science. Both methods are slightly different in form but nearly identical in content.

The Notes-Bibliography (NB) method or humanities style use notes instead of text citation (Turabian 2013, 90). It consists of a number and a note. The notes will be referred in the text as numbers started with one. The numbers in the text will be superscript while in the notes the number will be in regular font followed by period. The use of a note (footnote or endnote) is needed with any source used. Footnote will present at the end of each page while endnote will present at the end of the chapter or whole document. The NB method accommodates more sources involving even the esoteric ones. The subscript number is located within the text (usually at sentence end) to point to the footnote. The number is recurring at the beginning of the footnote and is full size, (not superscript) followed by the full stop. The citation for the first time is always in full while in the subsequent times comes in short. The same source footnotes (consecutively listed) are replaced with the word ibid, followed by the page number. The same source footnotes (not consecutively listed) are shortened. The citation for three or more authors come in full for first time and following times cited with the first author followed by et al. I noted some points regarding the formatting of the footnote: written the author’s names in full, publishing details of books is enclosed in brackets, journals titles are enclosed in double quotation marks. In addition, the foot note is indented two spaces from the paper margin.

The sources in the more concise Author-Date (AD) method are cited in the text, using parentheses including the author’s last name and publication date. No punctuation is used between the author name and the date. The AD method includes the references list in the end of the document with citation source details. The format for single author is (author’s last name and year) such as (Noor 2014). For multiple authors the format is such as (Noor and Adam 2014). For Corporate or Group Author the format is such as (Global Emergency Coordination 2014). For direct quotations the page number is also included such as (Noor 2014,66). For direct quotations from sources with no page numbers the citation use subheading, paragraph number, or other organizational division of the work such as (Yetman, under "During Slavery and After"). For text citation following original source mention in the previous text the format will be (quoted in Noor 2014).

I studied the format used in different sources. For electronic books the citation is the same as that for hard books with slight difference. In electronic books, the citation includes the web address link and the date of the citation.

3)Bibliography / References List

The Bibliography list provides more details of the cited work and facilitates stress the scholarly work in the written paper. The list organizes all sources alphabetically. I noticed that each sources is indented on the second line. The name of the author is inverted with the surname coming before the author first name. I noticed the sections of a source in the list are divided by full stop not commas. Another point I noted is the absence of brackets to separate publisher details.

The references list in the Author-Date (AD) method can include the author’s name followed by the date of the publication. Otherwise the reference list is structured like the one in bibliography method. In addition, the elements are separated by periods.

4)Conclusion

The benefits of the citation cannot be underestimated. Citing resources give credits to original author. In addition, citing resources serves to avoid plagiarism, assure accuracy for readers and links the written paper with other resources and scholarly articles. Moreover, the citation helpsme to extend the research beyond written paper. The manual for writers of research papers, theses, and dissertationsis a very useful resource for Turbian citation. The book was fulfilled with many examples to ensure proper citation using Turbian style. From my prospective, I found the book very informative and good reference to understand and practice proper Turbian citation.
