SGA Senate Minutes

I. Call to Order 7:04

II. Roll Call

·  Senate met quorum

III. Open Forum

·  Monday the 27th in the Carroll Room from 7-8:30, the Disaster Relief Committee will host a panel discussing opportunities for relief trips over spring break

·  The Elections and Appointment committee announces that the SAF vote will end Thursday at 5pm. Senators should ding, chalk, and encourage voting

IV. Minutes

·  Minutes pass, 6 abstentions

V. Seven Sisters Conference Updates

·  On Saturday the 18th, Meg and Ka’Neda attended the conference held at Mount Holyoke College

·  Discussed the issues that have been raised and encountered at each of the five remaining sister schools (Bryn Mawr, Barnard, Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, Smith; Vassar and Radcliff co-ed)

·  Smith was a leader at the conference, other schools look to Smith for an example, forefront in action on issues

·  Smithies voice concerns and opinions in forums, and don’t hesitate to get involved

·  Smith will host the conference next year, SGA presidents will plan the conference in April

·  Meg met with other Senate Chairs, most VPs aren’t Senate Chairs

·  The conference allows the SGA to reassess what we do at our school, and evaluate ourselves; opportunity to compare with similar schools

·  Barnard is trying to install Seven Sisters pride (tension with Columbia, only sister still connected with male college)

VI. Senate Open Forum Topics

a. Which topic do you think will attract the most students?

b. Voting

·  Smith College heritage, Seven Sisters history, what it means to be a women’s college yesterday and today (Dan and Helen Horowitz from American Studies, “Alma Mater” Helen is Wellesley grad, distinguished alum award recipient, and author)

·  Dining and nutrition

VII. Strategic Planning Process

a. Are you clear on the process?

b. What issues do you want to bring to President Christ’s attention next week?

·  President Christ will visit to hear from Senate next week

VIII. Closing Thoughts/Announcements

a. Go to Rally Day skits!

b. Go to Rally Day @ 1:30pm tomorrow in Sage
