Severe Weather Research Project

You work for a homeowners’ insurance company and have been given the task to inform your customers of the hazards of severe weather events. You and your group will research all four types of severe weather: hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms and blizzards and produce a google slides presentation to present to customers. Use the following instructions to guide you in completing your project. Each question should be at least one slide. Remember the guidelines for good slides: size, color, not too many words on one slide, lots of informative pictures, etc.. All partners will be responsible for creating and presenting to the customers.

1.  Title

a.  Include the first and last name of all your co-workers and the title of your project.

b.  Any pictures are optional here

2.  Severe weather titles

a.  Include four different severe weather title slides introducing each one (for example: Tornadoes) and include either a graphic, sketch or photo portraying each type of severe weather

3.  Definition

a.  Include the definition for each type of severe weather.

b.  Include at least one more different graphic, sketch or photo portraying each type of severe weather

4.  Causes

a.  Include the title “Causes” for each type of storm.

b.  Describe the weather conditions necessary for each storm to form and occur.

c.  How do meteorologists predict its formation?

d.  Include at least 2 graphics, sketches, or photos to help with explanation.

5.  Location and Timing

a.  Include the title “Location and Timing” for each type of storm.

b.  Explain where this severe weather is likely to occur in the US. Why does it occur in this location?

c.  Explain during which season this severe weather is likely to occur. Why does it occur during this season?

d.  Include a US map that shows the areas where the severe weather typically occurs.

6.  Safety Precautions

a.  Include the title “Safety Precautions” for each type of storm.

b.  What steps can be taken to prepare for the weather and provide safety for people? List 5 survival tips (ways to avoid or minimize harm from the severe weather)

b.  What does it mean when a watch is issued for this type of storm?

d.  Explain the system/scale that is used to describe the severity of your storm. (How is the storm measured? Include the name of the scale/system and the descriptions of the different levels.)

8.  Historical Event Example

a.  Include the title of a specific example of each severe weather that occurred in the U.S. (for example: Hurricane Katrina) *Note- for thunderstorms you can look for famous lightning strikes as well*

b.  Include the date and location of your specific example.

c.  Include 5 facts about your specific example.

d.  Include at least 2 photos showing your specific example.

9.  Citations

a.  Include the title “References”

b.  You must use at least five sources to complete this whole project.

c.  Cite ALL sources you use for both facts and images.

The final project is due in class on Monday 10/24/16.
