Christopher Wilkinson of Nappen was seised of a tenement held of the

lord of this manor and has died since the last court. John

Wilkinson is his son and heir and is of full age.

Thomas Waddington, free tenant of a tenement in Settle, rent 10s; has

died.

Edward Waddington is his son and heir and is of full age.

William Watkinson of Settle has died since the last court [no further

details].

Cutting down and carrying away underwood

The ... [cut off in photocopying] of Settle have cut down six little ashes, by the

gift of the officer, to repair their malt-kiln of Over Settle, ie whelpes

and lattes, which were allocated by the steward, therefore nothing in

amercement.

Various other ashes cut down for repairs, amerced by the steward.

The same officer has delivered two small ashes to the inhabitants of Nether

Settle to repair their malt-kiln, over and above 18 previously delivered

by the woodward.

The jurors say upon their oath that John Browne of Settle, miller, has

purchased from Anthony Browne of the same one messuage or

tenement, with land, in Settle, of an annual rent of 6s 8d, and that it is

held of the lord of this manor.

appear with their fellow jurors to inquire for the Quuen and the lord of

the liberty, delaying their verdict.

word is not in my dictionaries but from the form of the word

it appears to be an occupation. It seems to be derived from

pinso, meaning to knead, pound, crush or stamp.]

No-one shall break his neighbours’ hedges, under a penalty, for each

default, of 12d.

Goods forfeited

Jane Wilson late of Settle, late servant of William Watkinson, for felony

committed in the same place, was possessed of one filly, remaining in

the custody of Roger Wilson of Giggleswick, appraised by four tenants

at 12s, which same 12s Roger Wilson and Christopher Shutt clerk

promised to pay to Henry Tenaunt, the lord’s officer. The jurors also

say that John King of Settle was indebted to Jane in the sum of 29s 8d

for a cow, which John has similarly promised to pay to the officer.

A certain Desabella Browne, late of Settle was possessed of a small brass

bowl, a small dish, an old bow, a chest, an old coverlet and a blanket of

linen or hemp, valued at 6s 8d, which goods were forfeited to the lord.

Robert Corte of Settle complains of John Foster late of Settle and John Clitherow his pledge in a plea of trespass upon the case because he assigned him the end of his mansion house in Settle (amongst other things); however John kept a fire in the same end of the house, that is to say a new hearth, against the by-law. Robert paid a fine of 6s 8d, but John has not reimbursed him.

Robert Corte complains of John Foster and John Cliderow his pledge re debt of 10s 6d, ie 5s 6d on a loan and 5s which he promised to pay upon an account.
