Session Plan: Advanced Raft building (Literacy & Numeracy)

Classroom / Go through the scenario of the pirate crew. To collect lost treasure in the river where the ship sank.
10 minutesClassroom / Instructor to have pre tied knots and hitch in place to show and explain the uses of each knot. As per what is on the worksheet.
15 minutes
Classroom / Write in their own words in the worksheets;explain what each knot is called and what it is used for.
30 minutes
Classroom / Designing a team raft, drawing and labelling a diagram on the worksheet of what kit and knots used. Then coming up with a decision within the group for which raft design the team will build.
15 minutes / Getting ready, buoyancy aid and helmets.
30 minutes / Build raft. As per the chosen design by the group.
30 minutes / Put it on the river and measure the depth of the river. Record results on worksheet, then, optional splashing general wetness.
15 minutes / Take raft apart and remove kit.
30 minutes / Shower & change time. (optional not needed if group does not get wet)

Classroom / Transfer depth information into worksheets and draw a scale drawing of the cross section of the river, showing depth at the different points of the river.

Classroom / Workout the area of the cross section of the river, to get a total volume of one metre of the cross section of the river.

Classroom / Teach about 4 figure grid references (coordinates), using power point provided, if it needed. Then give them a set of grid references to locate a spot on the cross section of the river. To find the treasure, could give out chocolate coins as treasure for those who locate the treasure first.
