Session 3: Leadership With Others

Facilitator Training Packet

20 October 2014

Objective: By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

(1) Analyze and apply the relationship between intent and impact, understanding the role of perception in influencing actions and reactions.

(2) Reflect on the impact of our core values on our interactions with others, and how these interactions result in either positive or negative outcomes.

Session outline:

Estimated Time Required (minutes) / Description:
20 (All) / Dinner – eat and walk around and look at the flip charts with the group definitions of community.
Opening remarks – evening agenda, thank students for submitting situations for the Virtual Activity
●Describe overall objectives and flow of the session
●Again: set ground rules for participating
Transition to spaces– rejoin our facilitation section
10 (in groups) / Opening questions (suggested)
●Icebreaker: If you were running for President, whom would you choose as your VP (real or fictional, dead or alive)?
●Follow up: Why?
Transition from Recap – connect it back to session two (individual core values)
Tie in Bridge Activity - how are our core values complicated by interactions with other people?
5 / Define intent/impact, action/reaction in your group
Intent: what a person meant to do.
Impact: the effect it had on someone else.
Important takeaway about intent vs. impact: the impact it had may not be what the person intended
Important takeaway about action vs. reaction: we cannot control others’ actions, only our reactions
Suggest that if it’s helpful for discussing the bridge activity responses, use this vocabulary.
15 / Review the Bridge Activity Submissions as a group, bring them up in later discussions when they’re useful, as well
●apply intent/impact, action/reaction to assess the perceptions and misperceptions that led to these conflicts of values
20 / Intent vs. Impact
●Transition: How can our behavior affect others?
●What was a time when the impact of your actions/words wasn’t what you intended? What happened? (facilitators model if needed)
●How can others perceive our behavior differently than we intend?
Optional Dartmouth Connection: Discuss the use of slang or derogatory terms on campus. While the intent of usage may be in jest, what are the impacts of these actions on others?
20 / Action vs. Reaction
●How did you react to the negative consequences of someone else’s actions? Was it their fault? What about in the case of a positive interaction, how did you react? (facilitators model if needed)
●Quote: “Everybody is the sum total of their reactions to experience.” – Hunter S. Thompson. What does this mean? Do you agree or disagree? Why?
25 / Discussion of immediate community:
●Why are our friends important? (High School friends and Dartmouth friends)
●What do they say about us?
Quote: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohm. True or false? Why?
●Do we act differently with different people? How? Why?
Dartmouth connection
●How would you describe how you fit in at Dartmouth?
●How is college community different from your high school community?
●How did you see yourself in high school? How do you want people to see you at Dartmouth?
●In what ways can the Dartmouth community influence someone’s perception of its students, internally or externally?
5 / Debrief - Recap and goals for the week
Facilitators should end the session with a brief summary of how discussions tied to this sessions objectives.
Introduce (3.5) Bridge Activity
●Students will describe what they think Dartmouth’s values are.
●Prompt: What do you think Dartmouth’s community values are?
