Early Detection for Preschoolers

The preschool years are a time of incredible growth and discovery. They are also a time when your child begins developing speech, language and social skills that are the building blocks for future academic success.

Not every preschooler masters the same skills at the same age. However, there are warning signs that your child may be having trouble acquiring important communication, learning and social skills. If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, it may be a sign that your preschooler can benefit from Speech-Language services.

Does your preschooler:

  • Have trouble comprehending concepts or vocabulary?
  • Have trouble expressing feelings, ideas, and experiences?
  • Have trouble learning numbers, letters, or days of the week?
  • Get distracted easily or fidget with hands, feet, or body?
  • Have trouble listening, following directions, or answering questions?
  • Have trouble interacting or playing with others?
  • Have trouble pronouncing words or being understood?

Speech, Language Therapy, Social Thinking, and Reading Programs for Children

Parents often associate the elementary school years ages 5 to 12, with “the Rs” - reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic. The signs of academic struggles can be obvious, especially if a student is having difficulty learning how to read, write, communicate clearly, listen, and answer questions in class.

While these learning skills are critical, it is equally important that students develop the social thinking and related social skills necessary to maintain friendships and work in a group. If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, your child may benefit from Speech-Language services.

Does your child:

  • Have difficulty with schoolwork or forget to turn in assignments?
  • Have trouble making or keeping friends or “fitting in” socially?
  • Have difficulty listening, following directions, or answering questions?
  • Have difficulty reading or understanding what he or she reads?
  • Have trouble with written expression?
  • Have trouble using vocabulary or expressing feelings, ideas, and experiences?
  • Have trouble producing language that is organized and intelligible?

Speech and Language Therapy for Pre- School and School-Aged Children

CNYSpeechpathology offers comprehensive speech and language and occupational therapy services, addressing both common and complex issues among children, including articulation disorders, tongue thrust, expressive and receptive language, language based learning disabilities, auditory processing and written expression. Parents often supplement school-based therapy or choose to take advantage of our effective programs that are not offered in school

Screenings

At CNYSpeechPathology, we believe children with speech, language, and social communication difficulties have the best results when their problems are detected and treated as early as possible. That’s why we offer screening services to help schools and other youth organizations identify students with speech and language issues that warrant further assessment.

Preschool and Private School Programs. Schools contract with us to complete screenings for their students. Screening is a quick way to monitor a child's typical development. Screening tools are brief measures that distinguish children who are at risk for developmental delay or disorders. A screening is used not as a diagnosis but indicates a child's need for further assessment and follow up. We screen for issues such as speech and language development and auditory processing disorders.

We can directly contract with your school to provide assessments and individual or small group therapy services during the school day. We also offer:

  • A private pay option for our specialized services at your site during school.
  • In-service events and training for teachers and staff members.
  • Individual screenings for speech, language and occupational therapy services.
  • On-going parent and professional consultation and support.
