SERVICES:

  • A well-stocked Sight Advice Centre in Stricklandgate House, Kendal, with a large range of specialist equipment for daily living
  • An outreach service, assisting people with visual impairment to achieve an improved quality of life
  • Assistive Technology support – helping people to use specialist technology equipment and aids
  • A Sight Advice Information Desk service run by trained volunteers at Westmorland GeneralHospital
  • Part of the integrated low vision service run across South Cumbria
  • Eight support groups based in towns across the SouthLakes area
  • Support for visually impaired children and their families
  • Support for those who have combined sight and hearing loss
  • Activity and social groups including craft, guided walks, keep fit and swimming
  • VITAL group for visually impaired young adults
  • An information course of 5 weekly sessions for those who are newly registered as Sight Impaired (Partially Sighted) or Severely Sight Impaired (blind)
  • Support in form filling and signposting for benefit claims
  • Newsletters and a large selection of information are available in alternative formats - in large print, Braille and audio-cassettes. This includes details of talking books (cassettes and CDs - or the new Playway mini-cassettes provided free of charge by local libraries)

SERVICES:

  • Ostley House - a residential home for 38 visually impaired adults with 2 respite places
  • Day Care also available
  • An outreach service assisting people with visual impairment to achieve an improved quality of life
  • Sight Advice Centres are sited at Ostley House and at the BDBS office in Cavendish Street. A large range of specialist equipment for daily living can be demonstrated
  • Assistive Technology support – helping people to use specialist technology equipment and aids.
  • Part of the integrated low vision service run across South Cumbria
  • Six support groups based in towns across the Furness area
  • Support for visually impaired children and their families
  • Help with claiming benefits and support for clients attending tribunals
  • Activity and social groups including craft
  • A large selection of information is available in alternative formats - in large print, Braille and audio-cassettes. This includes details of talking books – and the local newspaper is recorded by the Society. A monthly newsletter for the Grange area is also recorded.
  • An information course is planned to help those who are newly registered or diagnosed as Sight Impaired (Partially Sighted) or Severely Sight Impaired (blind)

The office at Cavendish Street is open from 9.00am –5.00pm Monday to Friday

Ostley House has an open day, 2nd Tuesday of the month from10.00am - 12 noon
