BYKER BRIDGE HOUSING ASSOCIATION

Byker Bridge Housing Association is the largest charitable provider of accommodation and services to single homeless, isolated and vulnerable men and women in the North East. The Association has been in operation for over 30 years and provides a wide range of services to some of the most vulnerable members of society. Services are now provided in Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Tynedale and Blyth Valley.

Newcastle

BBHA provides accommodation to 158 men and women in Newcastle, this includes 22 residents at Byker Bridge House, our Direct Access Unit. The Hostel is staffed by at least two members of staff 24 hours per day.

While another ten reside at our forensic Hostel, Westbridge.

The remaining 126 residents are housed in our supported accommodation projects across the city. Shared homes range from large 9 bedroomed shared houses with a Residential Support Worker to smaller Housing projects with a Support Worker who visits daily. Smaller single person flats with a lower level of support are provided to 43 tenants of the Association.

The Vulnerable Adults Support Project provides support to 26 people with learning difficulties in their own tenancies.

The Skills Training Day Centre provides life and social skills training to vulnerable adults. Training is provided in numeracy and literacy, personal health and hygiene, domestic skills, gardening, shopping, cooking, budgeting and basic computing skills.

The Workshop provides therapeutic occupation to 12 volunteers, at the project donated items of wooden furniture are renovated and then sold to the public to finance the scheme.

The Joseph Cowen Healthcare Centre provides primary health and social care service to those who are homeless, in temporary accommodation or cannot register with a GP. The Centre operates on an open drop in basis and services include; daily access to a GP, Community Psychiatric Nurse, bathing facilities, clothing store, needle exchange and women only facilities.

Gateshead

The Association provides accommodation to 11 men and women across three housing projects. 3 residents benefit from a Residential Support Worker while the remaining nine residents benefit from a Support Worker who visits on a daily basis.

The Gateshead Floating Support Scheme, in partnership with the Youth Offending Team, offers support to enable disadvantaged young people 16-19 years, maintain their tenancies and achieve stability. The service ensures the young person maintains control and choice over their own lives promoting independence and preventing homelessness.

North Tyneside

25 residents benefit from supported accommodation in the North Tyneside area. 10 residents have on site support from a Residential Worker, 15 residents receive daily support from a visiting Support Worker.

South Tyneside

Coppergate House, our only ‘wet’ hostel accommodates 25 people in Hebburn with an additional 10 tenants receiving support in the satellite flats attached to the project.

8 vulnerable residents receive support in a shared housing scheme in South Shields with a Residential Support Worker.

The Under the Bridge floating support scheme provides support to 20 people at risk of becoming homeless in South Tyneside.

Northumberland

10 residents benefit from supported accommodation in two projects in Blyth and Prudhoe.

The Northumberland team includes two floating support services one of which operates in Blyth Valley while the other operates in Tynedale. Both services offer support to vulnerable adults with severe and enduring mental health problems, substance misuse problems or learning difficulties. 32 clients are offered support to enable them to maintain their own tenancies.
