“Some Biblical Counsel Regarding Marriage”

(Sunday Morning August 18th, 2013)

Passage: Ephesians 5:22-33

Every marriage involving a Christian husband and a Christian wife can, not only survive, but thrive,

and I can make that bold statement for two simple reasons
a. First, I Can Say That, Because N______is I______With God

Jer 32:17 “'Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your
outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult forYou”

b. Second, I Can Say That Because of the Presence and Power of the H______S______
Eph 5:18“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit”

I. The Biblical Advice That Applies to the Christian Wife

1) You (Wives)Should Have a S______Attitude – vs 22

The idea of mutual submission does not negate the Husband’s authority over his wife in the home,
but itdoes rule out the idea of him being a D______.

Rom 12:10“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one anotherin honor”

2) You (Wives) Should Have a S______Motive – vs 22

If a wife’s motive is pleasing her husband, she is setting herself up for d______; but if her

motive is pleasing the Lord, she can rest assured that the Lord never misses a______.

1 Pet 3:1-2 “1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are
disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives. 2 as they
observe your chaste and respectful behavior”

1 Pet 3:3-4 “3 Your adornment must not be merely external -- braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry,
or putting on dresses; 4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality
of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God”

3) You (Wives) Should Have a S______Role – vs 23-24

Gal 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female;
for you are all one in Christ Jesus”

The Bible clearly affirms the equality of the sexes, but equality and roles are two d______i______.

1 Cor 11:3 “But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head
of a woman and God is the head of Christ”

John 10:30 “(Jesus Said) ‘I and the Father are One’”

II. The Biblical Advice That Applies to the Christian Husband

1) You (Husbands) Should Have a S______Love – vs 25

Rom 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”

Jesus was under no i______, in other words, when He made us the object of His love; He knew about our i______, but He chose to love us anyway.

2) You (Husbands) Should Have a S______Love – vs 25

Phil 2:3-4 “3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another
as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests,
but also for the interests of others”

We should share our resources with her; we should give her gifts; we should be willing
to p______and d______her if necessary.

3) You (Husbands) Should Have a S______Love - vs 26-27

Col 2:10“…and in Him (Referring to Jesus Christ) you have been made complete,…”

This means that, like Christ, we bury any sins that she has committed against us in the past in the deepest

sea and we r______t______n______m______.

4) You (Husbands) Should Have a S______Love - vs 28-29

1 Pet 3:7“You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone
weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that
your prayers will not be hindered”

The word “weaker” that Peter used referred to a different type of material like silk as compared to denim,

and the word “honor” literally means “to t______” or “to v______.”
