Serdjo Kos , PhD ,Full Professor with tenure , FRIN

Dr. sc. Serdjo Kos was born in Rijeka, the Republic of Croatia, wherehe graduated fromTechical High School, Naval Engineering Course. In 1975/76, he was employed as take-over controlor of internal combustion engine housings in Torpedo engine factory. In 1980/89 he was employed as a deck officer in Croatia-line (ex Jugolinija) shipping company, as the Third, Second and Chief officer. He has eight effective years of ocean-going service in navigation(terrestrial navigation ,celestial navigation, electronic navigation , etc.) on vessels of various types, sizes, technologiesand purposes. In 1986 he received B.Sc. degree at The Faculty of Maritime Affairs and Traffic, course Nautical Sciences. Professor Kos is also in possession of more than 20 valid STCW cerificates (GMDSS Radio Operator's Certificate, Advanced Liquified Gas Tanker Operations Certificate, Bridge Team Management Certificate, Bridge Resource Management Certificate, …to mention some), and a holder of validMaster Mariner Certificate – Master of a Ship of 3000 GT, or more.

Since 1989,professor Kos has beenfully employed at The Faculty of Maritime Studies, University of Rijeka. In 1989 he passed a special professional exam for working in outer trade transport and traffic, in the field of commercial business.In 1992 he obtained the M.Sc. degree, defending his thesis entitled ''A Contribution to the Improvement of Container Transport Technology''. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in 1994, with doctoral thesis entitled ''A Contribution to the Improvement of Terrestrial Navigation by the Laser System'', within the Technical Sciences Department, in the field of traffic technology and transport.

The professor is enrolled under the registration number 165731 in Research Registry of Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, Republic ofCroatia, Technical Sciences Department, field of traffic technology and transport.

In 1989 he was appointed as assistant, and in 1993 as lecturer on Terrestrial navigation. In 1998 he was appointed an Assistant Professor, in 2001 an Associate Professor , in 2004 a Full Professor and in 2009 a Tenured Professor in Technical Sciences Department, in the field of traffic technology and transport, for the following subjects:

-Terrestrial navigation I and II

-Multimodal transport.

On 15th September, 2009, at the session of the University of Rijeka Senate, he was elected the Tenure Full Professor at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka,Technical Sciences Department, in the field of traffic technology and transport.

The Professoris a lecturer on:

-Terrestrial Navigation and Electronic Navigation , the undergraduate study at the Faculty of Maritime Studies, the University of Rijeka, Nautical Sciences, and Sea Transport and Technology courses,

-Integrated and Multimodal Transport and Maritime Accidents Investigation, the graduate study at the Faculty of Maritime Studies, the University of Rijeka;

-Maritime Navigation Systems , Multimodal Transport Networks, Inonospheric Effects on Satellite Navigation Systems , the postgraduate doctoral study at the Faculty of Maritime Studies, the University of Rijeka.

-a former lecturer (Maritime Safety Supervision and Management) at the postgraduate study at the Faculty of Maritime Studies, the University of Split, Croatia.

-Investigation of Maritime Accidents at postgraduate specialistic study „Criminal Investigation“ , Faculty of Law – University of Rijeka .On the same study prof. Kos was member of the Committee for the defense of the graduate thesis on specialistic study Criminal investigation.

-Multimodal Transport at the postgraduate study at the University of Trieste , Italy.

Since2003 he has been a member of the Editorial Board, and since 2004 Editor-in-Chief of the Scientific Journal of Maritime Research - "Pomorstvo", ISSN: 1332-0718, e-ISSN: 1846-8438. The Journal is published twice a year (in June and December) by the University of Rijeka - Faculty of Maritime Studies, with the financial support of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, and the University of Rijeka Foundation.

He was a lecturer at the international postgraduate study ''Alma-Mater Studorium – Universita di Bologna – Uniadrion Summer School – Maritime Transport and Logistics'' on Multimodal Transportation. At the postgraduate study ''First Level University Master Course – Transport Logistics and Economic Integration with the Balkan Area'', the University of Trieste, he lectured on Multimodal Network and the Transport Systems. In 2008 hebecame a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation. Prof. Kos is member of the European Geosciences Union . Prof. Kos was a visiting professor at the World Maritime University , Malmo, Sweden.

Since 2006 he has been appointed by the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructurea member of the Examination Commission of the Harbour Master's Office, Rijeka, for acquisition of highest ranks onboard ships – Master of a shipof 3000 GT, or more, and Chief officer of a ship of 3000 GT, or more. Also, since that year he has been a member of the Committee for the academic recognition, and recognition of the study period at the University of Rijeka. He is an authorized instructor on the computerized navigational GMDSS/VTS Simulator ''Transas Navi Trainer Professional 4000''.

In September 2011 , professor Kos established the „Navigation GNSS laboratory (Space weather)“ at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka with the aim of the laboratory to enable researches of relevant characteristics of the electronic navigation systems , in particular to carry out researches on complex impact of „space weather“ effects on GNSS systems.It was the first laboratory of its kind inthe Republic of Croatia.

Professor Kos is in charge of several maritime and technical-technological studies and elaborates. He participated in the organisation and work of several professional workshops held in the Republic of Croatia and abroad, on topics related to sea navigation (GNSS, AIS...).

The Professor is also a member of several sigificant international associations of scientific journal editors, such as the Association of Earth Science Editors, Pittsburgh, USA,andThe Council of Science Editors, Reston, USA.

He published over 130 scientific as well as professional papers, in various scientific and professional journals in Croatia and abroad. As a member of the Organising Committee and in the role of invited lecturer he participated on many scientific meetings in the country and abroad.

As a guest Professor, he lectured at the Faculty for Maritime Studies and Transport Sciences, Portorož, the Republic of Slovenia, and at the Faculty for Maritime Studies, Kotor, the Republic of Montenegro. He is a consulting editor of four university textbooks, two expert books and a number of research papers in scientific journals, such as Opuscula Archaeologica, Pomorstvo, Naše more, ''Promet'' - Traffic and Engineering, Scientific Journal International,Journal of Navigation ,etc.

Currently, the Professor is a member of the Scientific Committee of several international scientific symposiums (TransNav – Gdynia, Poland;GNSS Baška Conference, Republic of Croatia; Sea, Transport & Logistics, Opatija, Republic of Croatia, etc.).

As an author and a co-author, he published seven university textbooks, several lecture notes and manuals,including one dictionary. He is a member of the Doctoral Thesis Committee at the University of Rijeka and the University of Zagreb. He has mentored a number of students in writing their graduation thesis (more than 80), several postgraduate masters and four doctoral thesis. Speaks english and italian language.

Because his achievement in the domain of Navigation theory – Theory of Loxodromic navigation is internationally recognised, the biography of Professor Kos is included in the 8th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, 2005-2006, by the world's eminentpublisher Marquis Who's Who, from the United States of America. In 2006 due to his scientific work and research, as well as joining the American Hall of Fame, the Professor received exceptional international acknowledgment by the American Biographical Institute. In the same year,Professor Serdjo Kos received the International „Archimedes Award“, assigned by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, UK.

Since 2007 Professor Serdjo Kos is the Head and Researcher-in-Chief of the scientific research project approved by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, under the code 112-1121722-3066, and the name ''Research into the Correlations of Maritime – Transport Elements in Marine Traffic''.

Prof.dr. Serdjo Kos is from 23th February 2010 , Commission Chairman of the professional exams in the Croatian Chamber of Traffic and Transport Technology , in the professional class of Maritime Transport Enginners and Traffic engineers on the inland waterways of the Republic of Croatia.

In the period 2008.– 2010. he was the Head of Nautical Sciences Department at the

Faculty of Maritime Studies.In the period 2006 – 2011 he was member of Commission for

academic recognition and the recognition of periods of study at the University of Rijeka.

Since 2010 he waselected as the Dean of the Faculty of Maritime Studies ( est. 1866)-

the University of Rijeka–for the period 2010. – 2013.

Since 2013 he is elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Maritime Studies ( est. 1866)- the University of Rijeka –for the period 2013. – 2016. His election as the Dean of the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka was confirmed on the 123rd session of the University of Rijeka Senate.

Since 2012. at the annual meeting, prof. Kos was elected as a president of the Croatian branch of the British Royal Institute of Navigation ( RIN , London , UK ).

Since 01st January 2013. prof. Kos is member of Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Navigation , international scientific journal , published six times a year by Cambridge University Press.

Since 2013. Prof. Kos is member of Scientific Board of the journal „Promet Traffic & Transportation“.

Since 20th June 2013. at the constituent assembly meeting, prof. Kos was elected as a president of the Association of higher education maritime institutionsof the Republic of Croatia. Prof. Kos performed this duty from 2013. – 2016.

Since 25th October 2013.- 01st April 2016 , prof Kos was a member of the International Executive Board of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) , headquartered in Tokyo , Japan.

From 02.12.2013. to 04.12.2013. prof. Kos participated in the GNSS PhD Summit at Universitat der Bundeswehr (University of German Federal Armed Forces) in Munich as a member of the Expert Committee for analysis and evaluation of different PhD thesis in the field of satellite navigation.

At the annual meeting of the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN) held on 15 July 2015 in London, Professor Kos was elected as a Member of RIN Council for mandatory period 2015.-2018.

At the meeting of the Nomination Committee of the European Academy of Sciences

and Arts, held in early July 2016, Prof. Kos was elected as a Active Member of the European

Academy of Arts and Sciences,in the scientific class VI - Technical Sciences. The

ceremonial inauguration was held at the headquarters of EASA in Salzburg, Austria, on

04th March 2017 , at the plenary session of the Academy.

Since april 2017. prof. Kos is member of International Scientific Committee of

Scientific Journal of Gdynia Maritime Unmiversity, Gdnyia , Poland.

The Professor's scientific areas of interest are the following domains: Loxodromic and orthodromic navigation theories; Terrestrial, Electronic and Astronomic navigation; Satellite and inertial navigational systems (Positioning errors of the GNSS systems regarding ionospheric and tropospheric delay, Correction of the Klobuchar model, Positional dilution of precision of the GNSS Systems,Space weather, Satellite positioning errors related to the extreme space weather/ionospheric and geomagnetic effects, Ionospheric monitoring for satellite navigation,Dynamics of ionosphere, GeoRSS systems and technologies, inertial navigation system errors , … etc.); Multimodal transport networks; Intermodal, Integrated/Multimodal transport systems , Optimization and simulations in maritime transport and Risk assessment of electronic navigation utilisation.
