Sequoias Prison Program Coordinator

Job Description

Prison University Project (PUP) and the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) are collaborating with the College of the Sequoias to implement a college program at two state prisons – California State Prison, Corcoran and California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility (SATF).This program will ultimately offer college preparatory and college level courses to inmates at both institutions, providing them with transferable credits to support transfer to four-year colleges upon release.

The College Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all academic and administrative systems related to the College of the Sequoias Program at California State Prison, Corcoran and SATF. This is a demanding position that requires extensive daily interaction with incarcerated students, correctional staff and administrators, and faculty. The job is performed both inside the prisons and off-site, in office at the College of the Sequoias Hanford Educational Center. Hours may include some evenings and weekends.

Core Job Duties:

  • Oversee planning of program course offerings
  • Recruit and trainprogram faculty
  • Escort, supervise and support faculty on-site
  • Manage all student assessment, placement, enrollment and registration systems
  • Supervise other Program staff, including inmate clerks (if applicable)
  • Maintain regular communication with prison staff and administrators
  • Coordinate processes with College of the Sequoias administration, staff, and faculty
  • Supervise and support program faculty, via regular in-class observation, faculty meetings, and individual and teaching team consultations
  • Collaborate with College of the Sequoias and Correctional facility staff to support data management and evaluation-related activities
  • Attend regular staff meetings and other organizational meetings

Other Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage faculty clearance data, submit clearances, and follow up as needed
  • Oversee program evaluation-related activities
  • Overseeprogram budget
  • Various clerical tasks (data entry, photocopying, filing) as needed
  • Oversee copy, equipment and supply requests and deliveries

Key Success Factors:

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Outstanding communication skills (written, verbal, presentation, etc.)
  • Ability to manage heavy workload, with multiple competing priorities
  • Strong work ethic and exceptional persistence
  • Aptitude for working in a culturally diverse environment; ability to interact patientlyand diplomatically with a wide varietyof constituencies
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, and exceptional detail-orientation
  • Passion for providing education opportunities to incarcerated populations
  • Ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor in stressful situations
  • Mastery of computer skills (MS Office Suite with strong emphasis on Excel, Google Documents, Groups, and Calendar, etc.)
  • Available to work some nights and weekends as required for program implementation.
  • Position requires walking up to three hours per day and lifting up to 15 pounds for 1/4 of the time.
