Sentinus Extended Schools and Shared Education Programme

Wednesday 25th January workshop for parents & children

Dear Parent,

Sentinus is a charity which works in the education sector with its main aim of engaging young people in activities which will provide an insight into the type of work that scientists and engineers do on a regular basis.

I am writing to invite you to participate in an evening of fun hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) problem solving activities in which you will be working alongside young people. It is hoped that engaging young people and adults in this type of activity will provide the stimulus for them to consider a career in one of these areas. It will also provide a more informed insight for parents to guide their children in this important decision.

The challenges are designed to be fun and will allow the participants to engage a range of skills and capabilities. They will also provide the opportunity for the young people to work alongside their children and have an enjoyable experience as well. The activities that the pupils will be doing in the afternoon and evening session will form the basis of a longer term collaborative project involving 8 schools in total. It is planned that the project work resulting from the programme will culminate in a Celebration Event in St. Paul’s High School in early 2017.

Most importantly, the activities will allow parents to see what the schools are trying to achieve in terms of knowledge and skills in the context of ‘The World Around Us’ component of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

In terms of the logistics of the evening event, we are asking all parents and children to arrive at the school by 6.20pm at the latest. We want to get the activities off the ground at 6.30pm and we propose to finish by 8.00pm.

We look forward to seeing you at the event and we anticipate a very enjoyable evening for all concerned. Could you please ask your child to let us know if you are attending and how many persons from your family plan to come along.

Yours faithfully,

Acting Principal

Mrs Oonagh McNally
