Senior Consultant, Asset Allocation

Overview

Reporting to the Director, Asset Allocation, the Senior Consultant, Asset Allocation is responsible for a variety of research that supports recommendations to bcIMC’s senior management and clients regarding strategic asset allocation. The Senior Consultant works with the Director and SVP, and, in many cases, the external actuary, to prepare asset-liability studies and other custom analyses related to our clients’ asset mixes, investment strategy and a wide range of investment topics. In this regard, the Senior Consultant must have in-depth knowledge of each client’s individual circumstances including investment objectives, liability obligations including actuarial funding status, legislative constraints, return expectations, risk tolerance, time horizon, liquidity constraints, stakeholders, etc.

The Senior Consultant also supports the decision-making of senior management on total portfolio management issues and tactical asset allocation strategy by monitoring clients’ asset mixes on a weekly basis relative to their policy, benchmarks, and investment constraints, modeling individual client trades for Asset Allocation Committee review, and proposing rebalancing and allocation transactions as required.

Qualifications

Must have:

  • An undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline
  • 5 to 10 years of direct experience in investment or actuarial consulting, or other capacity in the financial industry subsequent to completion of a Bachelor Degree in a related field
  • A broad knowledge of actuarial concepts, capital markets, portfolio construction techniques, and each of their roles in achieving a client’s financial objectives
  • Familiarity with the Canadian institutional investment landscape, in particular for pension plans
  • An ability to explain complex investment and risk issues to both lay and professional audiences
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • The ability and comfortable to actively engage with colleagues, mentor and supervise staff, handle multiple competing demands under tight deadlines, and be at ease with commonly used statistical and programming applications

Preferred:

  • Progress towards the Society of Actuaries (ASA/FSA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or similar designation
