A longtime administrator with 18 years of experience in higher education will join the Mt. San Jacinto Community College District on Jan. 18 as its vice president of human resources.

Irma Ramos, previously associate vice president of human resources at Long Beach Community College, has been hired by MSJC to replace Dr. Jon Tyler. Tyler, who has served as MSJC’s vice president of human resources since 2004, is retiring. An MSJC employee since 2000, Tyler is currently serving as the district’s interim president until a permanent president is hired.

The Board of Trustees approved Ramos’ hiring during its Jan. 17 meeting.

“MSJC is extremely fortunate to have found a seasoned professional” for the position, Tyler said. “With a significant number of openings for this position in the state, it speaks highly that Ms. Ramos has accepted to come here.”

Ramos, of West Covina, received her bachelor’s degree from DeVry University in Pomona. She earned a master’s degree from the Keller Graduate School of Management in Pomona and is nearly completed with her doctorate of education from Nova Southeastern University.

Before serving as associate vice president of human resources at Long Beach Community College District, Ramos served as the LBCC’s interim chief human resources officer, interim dean of instruction and human resources and the director of human resources and staff diversity.

Prior to her seven-year tenure at LBCC, Ramos worked at DeVry University, starting as its senior academic advisor and eventually serving as DeVry’s dean of student affairs at its Pomona, Long Beach and West Hills campuses.

Ramos has received academic awards and was the 2007-08 vice president of the Association of Chief Human Resource Officers/Equal Employment Officers, among other professional affiliations.

Eloy O. Oakley, superintendent-president of Long Beach Community College, said he and members of the LBCC community trust Ramos and praised her for her leadership during a collective bargaining negotiation. In a Nov. 7, 2007 letter, he described Ramos as possessing good humor, a calm demeanor and self-confidence.

“Ms. Ramos also has an engrained respect of and commitment to diversity and believes in the power it brings to the workforce,” Oakley wrote.
