DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs duties related to the sorting and counting of currency from automatic fare collection equipment; maintains records related to these activities; performs related work as assigned.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class perform highly physical work related to the operation of highly specialized sorting and counting equipment. This class is distinguished from Cash Handler in that the latter performs work related to the collection, sorting and counting of coins from automatic fare collection equipment.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Operates Currency Verification Counting Systems (CVCS) equipment; obtains bundles of currency from currency/coin sorting stations; places currency in the equipment and operates equipment to sort, count and bundle currency; reads meters and reviews printed output data; balances and reconciles output totals; performs light maintenance on and adjusts equipment as required; on a relief basis, operates coin counting and sorting equipment, fills coin magazines, transfers coin bags to vault, and prepares and balances records as required; maintains logs and records of work performed; may provide work instruction or lead direction to Cash Handler.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
U.S. currency denominations; safe work practices including proper lifting techniques; basic business arithmetic.
Skill in:
Performing accurate arithmetic calculations; maintaining attention to detail; balancing and reconciling differences in daily cash collection counts; preparing and maintaining clear, accurate records of daily cash collected and counted; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Ability to:
Must be able to learn to operate and perform minor maintenance on currency sorting and counting equipment.
Other Requirements:
Must be physically capable of repeatedly lifting bags and magazines of coins weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing carts weighing up to 1,000 pounds and performing bending and standing duties for a majority of the work shift.
A typical way of gaining the knowledge and skills outlined above is:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience involving the collection, sorting and counting of coins and currency; experience in each of the functional areas listed is required.
