Upward Bound Students
Senior ACT Achievement Award--$100
This scholarship will be awarded at the May 5th Upward Bound Awards Reception to the senior
having the highest ACT composite.
Junior ACT Achievement Award--$100.
This scholarship will be awarded at the May 5th Upward Bound Awards Reception to the junior having
the highest ACT composite.
ACT Tenacity Award--$100.
This scholarship will be awarded at the May 5th Upward Bound Awards Reception to the Junior or Senior who has the most improved ACT composite. (Yes, that's right! A scholarship for improvement!!!)
The “Write Way” Scholarship--$100.
This scholarship will be awarded at the May 5th Upward Bound Awards Reception to the best published student-written article and/or short story in The Grapevine for the 2006—2007 academic year (October—May). Submissions must be made (via email to or in a folder) by April 15th to be considered for this scholarship.
The “Writer’s Road” Scholarship--$100.
This scholarship will be awarded at the May 1st Upward Bound Awards Reception to the best creative portfolio of original, student-written poems, short stories and/or art work / illustrations submitted for the Write Connection (held in February at. Submissions must be presented (via email to buffmj@montevallo or in a folder) in an 8.5 x 11 format by January 15th to be considered for this scholarship.
The Masterpiece Scholarship-$500
Celebrating the Preciousness of Life—In memory of Bekah Buff
At Upward Bound, we stress academics; however, we also understand that many students must overcome personal adversity to succeed. The Masterpiece Scholarship rewards Upward Bound students who have demonstrated strength of character and have a desire to pursue a college education. The Masterpiece Scholarship is not awarded for the highest GPA or highest ACT score. Rather, it is based on a series of three personal essays. Students must complete the application found online at write 3 essays from the 7 essay topics given, with each essay 250--600 words in length, and submit the entire application packet online to . A scholarship committee will select a winner based on the following criteria:
ESSAY (25 points possible for each essay)
Clarity of thought in writing
Exemplar expression and creativity of ideas
Grammatical and mechanical correctness
STATEMENT OF GOALS (25 points possible)
Desire for academic persistence
Clear statement of academic and/or life goals
FOR YOUR ESSAYS, SELECT 3 TOPICS AND RESPOND:
Identify an attribute, character trait, or skill that distinguishes you from many of your peers. In other words, how are you a unique creation? How did you develop this? What do you hope to accomplish by using this distinguishable quality?
What are your dreams for the future? When you look back on your life in twenty years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful? What people, things, and accomplishments do you need? How does this particular scholarship fit into your plans for the future?
Consider your favorite book, movie, or work of art, etc. How has this [book, movie, or work of art] influenced your life in a meaningful and/or positive way? Why is it your favorite?
What has the most difficult time in your life, and why? How did your perspective on life change as a result of the difficulty? How will you be able to be a successful individual because of this adversity?
What person, living or dead, do you admire the most? Why? What lessons, habits, or philosophies can you learn and/or adopt from this person, which will enable you to pursue and achieve a college degree?
How has community service redefined your ideas of citizenship, as well as needs in your community?
How would you define diversity and what steps have you taken to reduce racism, intolerance, and prejudice where you live, work, or go to school?
