DEFINITION

Under supervision, to be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and condition of airport grounds, buildings, and surface areas; to perform manual labor; to operate light and mediumsize motorized equipment; and to perform related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Patches holes and seals surfaces with asphalt, concrete, and gravel; maintains shoulders; cuts brush, clears trash, trims or removes trees, and mows grass; plows snow and applies ice control procedures; checks and replaces broken or missing signs; sweeps surfaces, and performs similar related tasks involved in airport maintenance; operates equipment including trucks, tractormowers, painting machines, sweepers, concrete mixers, small rollers, loaders, forklifts, spreaders, and similar equipment of comparable size and complexity; operates stump cutters, chain saws, asphalt kettles, jackhammers, weed sprayers, hand mowers, and various hand tools; ensuresthat equipment is serviced with gas, oil, water, and lubricants; performs or assists with manual work in maintenance of roads and aircraft operating surfaces, culverts, drains, ditches, buildings, hangars, and roofs; acts as helper to other maintenance employees; may install, repair or replace fences; may train and direct temporary help in manual maintenance tasks; may perform minor repairs to tools or equipment.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: Requires high school graduation or its equivalency and two years of experience in the construction and maintenance of buildings and grounds, which includes operating medium-sized motorized equipment. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

a.Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in construction, maintenance and repair of paved and unpaved surfaces and buildings and grounds.

b.Knowledge of traffic regulations as they apply to the safe operation of motorized construction and maintenance equipment.

c.Knowledge of the effects of rain, snow, ice, wind, temperature and other factors affecting the safe landing of aircraft.

d.Knowledge of safe work practices and FAA regulations related to airfield operations.

e.Skill in the operation of intermediate-sized construction and maintenance equipment, especially during adverse weather conditions.

f.Ability to operate mowers, tractors, trucks, plows, snowblowers, sweepers, painting machines, loaders, forklifts, rollers, spreaders, jackhammers, sprayers, crack sealers and other equipment of similar size and complexity.

g.Ability to be innovative and work without close supervision.

h.Ability to evaluate airfield project work needs and to effectively establish priorities.

i.Ability to service and to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and assist with major maintenance of equipment.

j.Ability to perform heavy manual work.

k.Ability to work in severe weather conditions.

l.Ability to make building and building systems repairs.

m.Ability to communicate using two-way radio.

n.Ability to communicate tactfully and courteously with the public and co-workers.

o.Ability to reorganize daily work schedule depending on staffing and/or activity in area.

p.Ability to be safety conscious at all times regarding physical activity (lifting and moving items).

q.Ability to reason and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.

r.Ability to maintain airfield maintenance and inventory records.

s.Mental ability to address potential adverse or negative situations that may arise from time to time.

t.Ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions, accept constructive criticism and be able to project a positive image of the facility to customers.

u.Must be dependable, reliable and have a previous history of good attendance and punctuality.

v.Must be able to attend staff meetings and training meetings as required.

w.Knowledge of and ability to operate ladders and lifts.

x.Must be able to see and hear within normal ranges.

Physical Demands:

a.This position is active for the entire shift (standing, walking, stooping, twisting, lifting, bending, pushing, reaching, climbing, crouching and crawling).

b.Must be able to perform heavy manual work in severe weather conditions.

c.Must be able to lift 75 pounds unassisted and heavier loads with assistance.

d.May be required to operate heavy equipment, move furniture and work from safety ladders.

e.Ability to use hands/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulations, pushing and pulling and operating controls and equipment.

f.Must be able to see and hear within normal ranges.

Work Environment: On a daily basis, exposure to temperature variations or extremes; chemicals; odors; noise; vibrations; wetness; machinery and/or dust.

Licenses: Must possess a valid Wisconsin class “A” commercial driver’s license (CDL) with “N” (tanker) endorsement.

Special Requirements: Candidates who reach the final selection stage will be subject to a TSA security threat assessment, employment history verification, and a driving record background check. Random drug and alcohol testing is required. Must be available nights, holidays and weekends, and during snow and other airfield emergencies.
