E-mail Assignment

This assignment requires you to write an email to your teacher. The writing will call upon you to review your Facebook, Twitter, Vine, Path, Instagram, or Tumblr account. (If you do not have a social network account, please see Cell Phone/iPod Touch Option found below.) Highlight the OPTION you have chosen!

DIRECTIONS: Select 3 of the bullets listed for the option you have chosen. Write 3-5 complete sentences for each bullet. The questions should be answered in 3 separate paragraphs. Please circle the bullets for the question(s) you will be answering. Be sure to indent each paragraph. (You MUST answer ALL questions for each bullet you choose.)

Social Network Option:Keeping your Facebook, Twitter, Vine, Path, Instagram, or Tumblr account in mind, answer 3 of the following questions. Be sure to specify the social network you will be writing about.

  • In general, do you feel that your account is a safe internet environment? If so, why do you feel secure on this social network? If not, what can you do to your profile to protect yourself?

Look at it as if this was your résuméfor a future job or part of your application for your dream college…

  • What does this account say about you?
  • What do your pictures and/or videos tell a future employer or college about you?
  • What groups do you belong to? Who are you following? Do you think they are appropriate? Why or why not?
  • What about mini-feed? Can mini-feed make it unsafe for other people?
  • Who can look at your profile? Anyone? Your friends? Friends of friends? (Check your privacy settings.) Do you think your current privacy settings could be a potential problem? Why/why not?
  • Are you aware that judicial affairs and police officers are on these social network sites and can look at your profile? How do you feel about this? Do you think it’s fair? If you got charged for a crime, such as underage drinking, because your profile/information/tweets/etc tipped off the police, do you think that would be legitimate?

Cell Phone/iPod Touch Option:If you do not have one of the accounts listed above, follow these instructions.

Pretend a future employer or college admissions director found your cell phone or iPod touch. Select 3 of the following bullet points: (see DIRECTIONS given above)

  • What would the person think about you based on reading texts that are stored in your phone?
  • What do your apps say about you?
  • What about reading material (books, newsstand items, etc.)? Can a person tell what you are interested in by these items?
  • Along with any pictures, what about videos? What would they say to a future employer or college admissions director?
  • What does this device say about you?
