Course Description:

This course is designed on improving basic English core skills such as: reading comprehension, writing short and extended responses, and spelling in a smaller setting. The students will be guided through high interest novels, short stories, and poetry that can be used to help them build their reading and writing skills. Additionally, lessons will focus on practicing for the NYS ELA Examination Test students will encounter at the end of the year. Students will have consistent practice improving their reading and writing skills in a smaller setting.

General Overview:

Short Story Unit:

The first unit, students will read at least 6 short stories in class.

Poetry Unit:

This will be the second unit, students will learn and apply various poetic techniques to students own writing, as well as analyzing poems of established poets.

Novel Unit:

We will be reading at least 2 novels in class and students will have two independent reading projects throughout the year.

Writing Unit:

Writing Assignments: Students will be using Step Up to Writing Strategies to complete their writing assignments throughout the year. They will be writing in the form of journals, reflective pieces, informative, argument and expository essays, paragraphs, creative pieces and poetry. Students will be writing at least one piece of writing once a week.

Grading System:

Quarterly averages will be calculated based upon the following:

Classwork/Participation: 40%

Homework: 10%

Tests, Quizzes, Projects: 50%

Extra Help:

It is my goal that all students take responsibility for their learning and are successful in English this year. If a student is struggling in class, I am always available for extra help during study halls and after school.
