SELECTIVE UNIT S03

(Textbook Reading Skills)

(July 2012)

Unit Statement: In this unit the student will learn and apply skills for reading a textbook. The student will become an active reader by previewing the reading and activating prior knowledge. This will allow the student to read for understanding by practicing skills and applying new learning to at least one content area class.

Essential Outcomes: (Assessed for Mastery)

1.  The Student Will read titles, headings and summaries in textbooks in order to identify main ideas in a chapter.

2.  TSW explain how to use the introduction and the first sentence of each paragraph to preview the information in a chapter.

3.  TSW practice identifying vocabulary words in a chapter and compare to add to their prior knowledge.

4.  TSW identify and examine the visuals (pictures, graphs, maps) in the chapter to predict chapter content.

5.  TSW summarize the chapter content by previewing the end-of-chapter questions.

6.  TSW explain how the summary provides an overview of chapter content.

7.  TSW analyze and apply newly acquired textbook reading skills to at least 1 current course.

8.  TSW reflect on their improvements through journaling or other self-reflective project.
