WORLD GEOGRAPHY
SELECTIVE UNIT 2 (S02)
(Learning Beyond The Classroom)
(July 2015)
Unit Statement: Many QSI schools offer a variety of excursions outside of school, such as Week Without Walls, international trips, or even visits to local places of interest. These excursions can often have a direct connection to geography. While these may sometimes be integrated with a current unit of study in the World Geography course, they often are out of sync with the progress of units. S05: Learning Beyond the Classroom gives the teacher and student an opportunity to use these very teachable moments to complete course requirements. In this unit, the student is asked to reflect on the connections between what they experience firsthand and the content they have studied in the World Geography course. The teacher should take care to use either a significant trip (i.e. a week long trip to London), or a series of smaller trips (i.e. visits to some local museums, ethnographic complexes, historic sites) that will provide enough material for students to be able to meet the essential outcomes. During a Week Without Walls, or combination of excursions, the student will look for the five themes of geography, taking notes via pen and photography/video. The student will demonstrate he/she can observe the five themes (Human Environment Interaction, Place, Region, Movement, and Location and their corresponding sub-themes) in the field/real-world.
Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)
1. The Student Will identify the three parts of Human Environment Interaction (depend, adapt, modify) of the WWW destination.
2. TSWidentify the two parts of the Place (unique physical and human features) of the WWW destination.
3. TSWidentify the three parts of the Region (Formal, Functional, Vernacular/Perceptual) of the WWW destination.
4. TSWidentify the absolute and relative Location of the WWW destination.
5. TSWidentify the three parts of Movement (goods, people, ideas) of the WWW destination.
