(Cross-curricular Writing—Arts)

Unit Statement: In this unit the student will apply the writing process across the curriculum in the area of the Arts -- depending on the Arts class in which the student is presently enrolled (Music / Drama / Art / Film). Writing in the Arts includes the areas of note taking, summarizing, reviews, and essay writing. The student and teacher should endeavor to include the Arts teacher in this process as a consulting party. The writing will be based on what the student is studying in the Arts class and the final paper will be graded for content by the Arts teacher and for form by the writing teacher.

Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)

  1. The Student Willtake notesduring classroom lecture and discussion and from assigned readings (WS 454).
  1. TSW explore connections of concepts learned in the Arts classroom with the wider world and personal experience through a learning log (WS 455).
  1. TSW summarize an academic article published in an ARTS journal.
  1. TSW analyze composition features in an art review.
  1. TSW use the Writing Process to craft an effective essay based on a writing prompt (provided by the Arts instructor) related to a topic being explored in the current Arts course unit.

  1. The Student Willcreate a handbill/advertisement for a performance or art exhibit.

Practiced/Ongoing Outcomes: (development is ongoing)

  1. The Student Will*present a short presentation comparing the composition process within the area of ART being studied and the Writing Process.
  2. TSW** research academic articles in the field of Arts being studied in the present course (to be used in the completion of TSW3).
