Selective Breeding/ GMO Research Project

Objective: Describe examples where selective breeding has resulted in new varieties of cultivated plants and particular traits in domesticated animals.

You will be researching a plant or animal that has been selectively bred for human convenience. You can choose from a variety of species, including any agricultural plants/crops, livestock (pigs, cows, chickens, etc), or other domesticated animals. Your project will include research and presentation. You have many choices for a presentation. See the list below. Carefully read the rubric for expectations for this project.

Research:

1. Research and choose a plant or animal species that has been selectively bred or genetically modified. Write it here: ______

2. Research the areas listed below. Use a graphic organizer to do so. Do not simply copy + paste. Try to put your research in your own words!

a. Describe your species. How do humans use it? Why is it important to society?
b. Describe the characteristics of your species that are desirable. (wanted traits) Why is that a desired trait?
c. Explain how your species was selectively bred. Was inbreeding, hybridization, cloning or genetic engineering used at all? A combination of those techniques?
d. What are the positives or advantages to the selectively bred species? Why is your species better than one that is not selectively bred?
e. What are disadvantages to the species? Does the selectively bred species interfere with natural processes?
You have read some information about GMO. What is your opinion on them? Do you think it is safe? Do you think it good or bad? Explain your thoughts more than three sentences.

Presentation:

You may choose your presentation format from the list below. All will be graded on the same presentation rubric (attached). All the report needs to include one or more pictures.

All the presentation MUST include: Pictures of organisms, Pros & Cons graphic organizer

1. Research Paper Report + Speech

2-3 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman font, 12 size font, no title, reads a summary of paper-do not read entire paper, information is memorized or notecards are utilized, eye contact with audience, appropriate volume

2. Google Presentation + Speech

Minimum 10 slides, professional design and colors, minimum font size 28, balanced amount of pictures and text, presentation is minimum 3 minutes in length, information is memorized or notecards are utilized, eye contact with audience, appropriate volume

3. Video + Interview

Create a video that presents all research information; pretend you are a news reporter who reports the information about the animal that you choose.Video is a minimum of 4 minutes in length, video is clear, easy to hear/understand, no strange transitions, any music is appropriate.

4. Poster

Design a poster that contains information about your research.
