School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering

Honours Thesis/Engineering Project Topics for 2013

To complete the research requirement for their engineering degree, students now have a choice of completing either Honours Thesis A/B (AMME 4111/AMME4112) or Engineering Project A/B (AMME 4121/AMME4122) in 2013. Engineering Project A/B is intended to be more practical in orientation while Honours Thesis A/B demands extensive literature review and critical analysis of outcomes. Honours Thesis is a program for individuals whereas Engineering Project can be done by groups or by an individual.

Both courses require a progress report in the first semester of study. In the second semester, students for both courses will give a seminar but whereas Honours Thesis B students will submit a full honours level thesis, Engineering Project B students will each submit an Engineering Project Report. Enrolment in Honours Thesis A/B requires a ISWAM of at least 65 and can lead to an honours degree. Enrolment in Engineering Project A/B does not require a WAM level for entry and does not lead to an honours degree.

Attached are the titles of thesis and project topics that staff members of our school, and others associated with it, are proposing for next year. Full descriptions for each topic will be listed on the website at http://sydney.edu.au/engineering/aeromech/current-students/units of study.

You should discuss potential thesis and project topics with the relevant supervisors who will select students for their topics. Some topics are designated for either Thesis or Project; however students from either stream are encouraged to discuss applicability of listed topics with the prospective supervisor.

To: All students enrolling in AMME 4111 Honours Thesis A or AMME 4121 Engineering Project A in 2012 (this applies to ALL enrollees starting the courses in either Semester 1 or 2)

You should complete the honours thesis or engineering project topic selection form and place it in the box outside Room S444, Level 4, Mechanical Engineering Building by Thursday, 1 November 2012.

Selection of Engineering Project Topics for 2013

To:All students enrolling in AMME4121 Engineering Project A in 2013

(this applies to ALL enrollees starting this unit in either Semester 1 or 2, 2013)

You are required to discuss potential project topics with the relevant supervisors who will select students for their topics. It is possible to arrive at a topic of your own invention in consultation with a particular supervisor, in which case a short description of the proposed Engineering Project is required in addition to this form.

Alternatively, you may do a project supervised by an external supervisor in industry or in another university department. In this case you must also have an academic supervisor within the School of AMME who must approve your project topic and external supervisor. If you elect to take this option, please provide external supervisor details on the second page of the form below.

Note that students starting their engineering project in Semester 2 also need to submit this form by the deadline listed below. Leaving project selection until mid 2013 will severely restrict your options regarding both topic and supervisor.

Please complete this form and place it in the box outside Room S444, Level 4, Mechanical Building by Thursday, 1 November 2012.
