A. Honorary Membership

Article 3.1.3 of the ASHP Bylaws reads:

“Honorary Members. Persons who shall be elected for life by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors from among individuals who are or have been especially interested in, or who have made outstanding contributions to, pharmacy practice in organized health care systems. Honorary members may vote or hold office if otherwise eligible for active membership. No dues shall be required of honorary members.”

B. Board of Directors Award of Honor

Established in 1966, the ASHP Board of Directors Award of Honor recognizes individualsoutside the pharmacy discipline who have made extraordinary national or world-widecontributions to the health field. The award, which is conferred at the discretion of the Board, may be given annually to one or more persons and may be presented to the recipient at the Society’s Summer Meeting, Midyear Clinical Meeting, or other appropriate function. The recipients of the award, which consists of an inscribed plaque, are eligible for an honorarium equivalent to payment of their travel expenses to attend the event at which the award is bestowed. Therecipients may offer brief remarks upon acceptance of the award.

C. Award for Distinguished Leadership in Health-System Pharmacy Practice

Established in 2001, the ASHP Award for Distinguished Leadership in Health-System Pharmacy Practice recognizes individuals who have achieved excellence in health-system pharmacy practice leadership. Criteria for the award are as follows:

  1. Pharmacist licensed to practice in the United States,
  2. ASHP member,
  3. Record of having led sustained, progressive improvements in pharmacy services within specific U.S. hospitals or health systems, and
  4. Record of having achieved national prominence (such as through publications and presentations at professional conferences) for practice leadership.

Letters of nomination should state how the nominee meets the criteria for the award.

D. Donald E. Francke Medal

Established in 1971, the ASHP Donald E. Francke Medal honors pharmacists who have madesignificant international contributions to health-system pharmacy. The medal is conferred at the discretion of the ASHP Board of Directors. Itmay be given annually to one person and may be presented to the recipient at the Society’s Summer Meeting, Midyear Clinical Meeting, or other appropriate function. The award consists of an inscribed medal, and the recipient is eligible for an honorarium equivalent to payment of his or her travelexpenses to attend the event at which the award is bestowed. The recipient provides a lecture at that time.

E. Award of Excellence

Established in 2005 as the successor to the ASHP Certificate of Appreciation, the ASHP Award of Excellence may be conferred annually to an individual or group of individuals in recognition of a specific recent contribution or achievement that has advanced the ability of hospital and health-system pharmacists in the United States to serve the needs of patients. Pharmacists and non-pharmacists, regardless of practice area or ASHP-membership status, are eligible. There is no limit to the number of awards that may be made annually. The award is intended to recognize an individual or group of individuals for a recent singular, nationally significant achievement or contribution rather than for career-long contributions.

Letters of nomination should include the following information:

  1. Professional position of the nominee (or individuals in a group) at the time of the contribution or achievement,
  2. Current professional position of the nominee or individuals in a group,
  3. Summary of the contribution or achievement,
  4. Brief statement about how the contribution or achievement advanced the ability of hospital and health-system pharmacists in the United States to serve the needs of patients, and
  5. Brief statement about why the contribution or achievement is of national significance.

F. Executive Vice President’s Award for Courageous Service

Established in 2000, the ASHP Executive Vice President’s Award for Courageous Service recognizes individuals or groups of individuals in health-system pharmacy who go beyond the call or assignment of duty to serve patients or assist pharmacists in serving patients, such as under emergency conditions or in times of natural disaster or other cataclysmic events. The award is for specific incidents of inspiring, unselfish service under adverse conditions. The award consists of a framed certificate and may be granted at any time at the discretion of the ASHP Executive Vice President. ASHP members, staff members, and others may nominate individuals for the award, which may be given without regard to membership in the Society.
