Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.

This Section uses the term "Architect." Change this term to match that used to identify the design professional as defined in the General and Supplementary Conditions.

Verify that Section titles referenced in this Section are correct for this Project's Specifications; Section titles may have changed.

  2. Include technical data and tested physical and performance properties.
  3. Shop Drawings: For pavement markings.
  4. Indicate pavement markings, colors, lane separations, defined parking spaces, and dimensions to adjacent work.
  5. Indicate, with international symbol of accessibility, spaces allocated for people with disabilities.

Retain "Samples" Paragraph below for single-stage Samples, with a subordinate list if applicable.

1.4QUALITY ASSURANCE

Retain "Regulatory Requirements" Paragraph below if pavement-marking work is located on public property and must comply with requirements of state or local DOT.

  1. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with materials, workmanship, and other applicable requirements of PA DOT for pavement-marking work.
  2. Measurement and payment provisions and safety program submittals included in standard specifications do not apply to this Section.

1.5FIELD CONDITIONS

  1. Environmental Limitations: Proceed with pavement marking only on clean, dry surfaces and at a minimum ambient or surface temperature of [40 degF (4.4 degC) for alkyd materials] [55 degF (12.8 degC) for water-based materials], and not exceeding 95 degF (35 degC).

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

See Editing Instruction No.1 in the Evaluations for cautions about named manufacturers and products. For an explanation of options and Contractor's product selection procedures, see Section016000 "Product Requirements."

2.1MANUFACTURERS

Retain "Manufacturers" Paragraph and list of manufacturers below to require products from manufacturers listed or a comparable product from other manufacturers.

  1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following:

Retain "Basis-of-Design Product" Paragraph and list of manufacturers below to identify a specific product or a comparable product from manufacturers listed. Retain option and delete insert note if manufacturer's name and model number are indicated on Drawings.

  1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide product indicated on Drawingsor comparable product by one of the following:
  2. Aexcel Inc.
  3. Benjamin Moore & Co.
  4. Color Wheel Paints & Coatings.
  5. Columbia Paint & Coatings.
  6. Conco Paints.
  7. Coronado Paint; Division of INSL-X Products Corporation.
  8. Diamond Vogel Paints.
  9. Dunn-Edwards Corporation.
  10. Ennis Traffic Safety Solutions, Inc.
  11. Frazee Paint.

  22. Scott Paint Company.
  23. Sherwin-Williams Company (The).

2.2PAVEMENT-MARKING PAINT

Retain one of four "Pavement-Marking Paint" paragraphs below. Verify availability with marking-paint manufacturers.

In first "Pavement-Marking Paint" Paragraph below, drying time of TypeN is 15 to 30 minutes. TypeF dries faster, in three to six minutes if heated to about 125 degF (51.5 degC). TypeS dries slowest and should only be used where traffic cones can be in place for one hour or more. Alkyd-resin-type pavement paints exceed 150-g/L VOC limits imposed by the EPA for "traffic-marking coatings," but may meet 450-g/L VOC limits imposed by the EPA for "zone-marking coatings." Revise text if cancelled standard FSTT-P-115, cited by some manufacturers, is required. See Evaluations.

In first "Pavement-Marking Paint" Paragraph below, revise type to TypeI if anticipated weather conditions are sufficiently benign. See Evaluations. Some formulations of waterborne emulsions are quick drying, others less so; see manufacturer's literature.

  1. Pavement-Marking Paint: Latex, waterborne emulsion, lead and chromate free, ready mixed, complying with FSTT-P-1952, TypeII, with drying time of less than [three] [45] minutes.

Retain required color(s) in "Color" Subparagraph below. If more than one color is required, indicate locations of each on Drawings or by inserts.

  1. Color: [White]

Retain "Glass Beads" Paragraph below if reflectorized pavement markings are required. Retain option or "Roundness" Subparagraph below, or both, if required; revise to suit Project. See Evaluations.

Retain "VOC Content" Paragraph below if required for LEED-NC or LEED-CSCreditIEQ4.2 and product is used inside the weatherproofing system such as for underground parking. VOC content limit is that for traffic- or zone-marking coatings. Coordinate product selection to ensure that products comply.

  1. VOC Content: Pavement markings used on building interior shall have a VOC content of 150g/L or less.

Insert product requirements here for permanent-marking tapes or thermoplastic paints if required. See Evaluations.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1EXAMINATION

  1. Verify that pavement is dry and in suitable condition to begin pavement marking according to manufacturer's written instructions.
  2. Proceed with pavement marking only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2PAVEMENT MARKING

  1. Do not apply pavement-marking paint until layout, colors, and placement have been verified with Architect.

Marking-paint manufacturers caution that paint will bleed or tear surface of new asphalt unless asphalt is aged before painting. This aging period may vary from 30 to 90 days. If pavement marking must proceed immediately, consider revising text to a phased application of a thin first coat followed by a thicker second coat once asphalt has aged. Verify that two-coat application is recommended by marking-paint manufacturer.

  1. Allow paving to age for a minimum of 30days before starting pavement marking.
  2. Sweep and clean surface to eliminate loose material and dust.

Retain option in paragraph below if retaining waterborne emulsion or latex pavement-marking paint.

  1. Apply paint with mechanical equipment to produce pavement markings, of dimensions indicated, with uniform, straight edges. Apply at manufacturer's recommended rates to provide a minimum wet film thickness of [15 mils (0.4 mm)]

Retain first subparagraph below if graphic symbols or lettering is required.

  1. Apply graphic symbols and lettering with paint-resistant, die-cut stencils, firmly secured to pavement. Mask an extended area beyond edges of each stencil to prevent paint application beyond the stencil. Apply paint so that it cannot run beneath the stencil.

Retain subparagraph below if glass beads are required for reflectivity.

  1. Broadcast glass beads uniformly into wet markings at a rate of 6 lb/gal. (0.72 kg/L).

3.3PROTECTING AND CLEANING

  1. Protect pavement markings from damage and wear during remainder of construction period.
  2. Clean spillage and soiling from adjacent construction using cleaning agents and procedures recommended by manufacturer of affected construction.
