ENCLOSED SWITCHES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  SUMMARY

1.2  DEFINITIONS

Retain abbreviations that remain after this Section has been edited.

  1. GD: General duty.
  2. GFCI: Ground-fault circuit interrupter.
  3. HD: Heavy duty.
  4. RMS: Root mean square.
  5. SPDT: Single pole, double throw.

1.3  SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For each type of enclosed switch, circuit breaker, accessory, and component indicated. Include dimensioned elevations, sections, weights, and manufacturers' technical data on features, performance, electrical characteristics, ratings, and finishes.
  2. Enclosure types and details for types other than NEMA250, Type1.
  3. Current and voltage ratings.
  4. Short-circuit current rating.

Full interrupting rating for the maximum available fault is preferred, except in unusual cases where the available fault current is so abnormally high that fully-rated breakers would be prohibitive in cost. Delete the first subparagraph below unless series rating of overcurrent protective devices is necessary and approved.

  1. UL listing for series rating of installed devices.
  2. Features, characteristics, ratings, and factory settings of individual overcurrent protective devices and auxiliary components.
  3. Shop Drawings: Diagram power, signal, and control wiring.

Retain paragraph and subparagraphs below if required by seismic criteria applicable to Project. Coordinate with Division26 Section Vibration and Seismic Controls for Electrical Systems.

  1. Manufacturer Seismic Qualification Certification: Submit certification that enclosed switches and circuit breakers, accessories, and components will withstand seismic forces defined in Division26 Section Vibration and Seismic Controls for Electrical Systems. Include the following:
  2. Basis of Certification: Indicate whether withstand certification is based on actual test of assembled components or on calculation.
  3. The term "withstand" means "the unit will remain in place without separation of any parts from the device when subjected to the seismic forces specified."
  4. Dimensioned Outline Drawings of Equipment Unit: Identify center of gravity and locate and describe mounting and anchorage provisions.
  5. Detailed description of equipment anchorage devices on which the certification is based and their installation requirements.

Coordinate paragraph below with qualification requirements in Division1 Section "Quality Requirements" and as supplemented in "Quality Assurance" Article.

  1. Qualification Data: For testing agency, if used.

Retain paragraph and subparagraphs below if Contractor is responsible for field quality-control testing.

  1. Field quality-control test reports including the following:
  2. Test procedures used.
  3. Test results that comply with requirements.
  4. Results of failed tests and corrective action taken to achieve test results that comply with requirements.
  5. Operation and Maintenance Data: For enclosed switches and circuit breakers to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals. In addition to items specified in Division01 Section Closeout Procedures, include the following:
  6. Manufacturer's written instructions for testing and adjusting enclosed switches and circuit breakers.
  7. Time-current curves, including selectable ranges for each type of circuit breaker.

1.4  QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA70, Article100, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, and marked for intended use.
  2. Comply with NFPA70.

Delete the first subparagraph below unless unusual dimensional restrictions apply to the devices in the project.

  1. Product Selection for Restricted Space: Drawings indicate maximum dimensions for enclosed switches and circuit breakers, including clearances between enclosures, and adjacent surfaces and other items. Comply with indicated maximum dimensions.

1.5  PROJECT CONDITIONS

Specify unusual environmental or service conditions here. For equipment installed outdoors, indicate maximum and minimum ambient temperature and expected humidity range.

  1. Environmental Limitations: Rate equipment for continuous operation under the following conditions, unless otherwise indicated:
  2. Ambient Temperature: Not less than minus 22 degF and not exceeding 104 degF.
  3. Altitude: Not exceeding 6600 feet.

1.6  COORDINATION

Edit this Article to delete or add types of construction and encumbrances that affect switch and circuit-breaker installation.

  1. Coordinate layout and installation of switches, circuit breakers, and components with other construction, including conduit, piping, equipment, and adjacent surfaces. Maintain required workspace clearances and required clearances for equipment access doors and panels.

1.7  EXTRA MATERIALS

  1. Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents.

Edit first subparagraph and associated subparagraphs below for quantities of spare fuses to be provided.

  7. Nonfusible Switch, 1200A and Smaller: NEMAKS1, Type HD, lockable handle with capability to accept two padlocks, and interlocked with cover in closed position.

Retain selected subparagraphs below with either switch paragraph above. Verify that accessories specified are available and appropriate for switch types and ratings specified.

  1. Equipment Ground Kit: Internally mounted and labeled for copper and aluminum ground conductors.
  2. Neutral Kit: Internally mounted; insulated, capable of being grounded, and bonded; and labeled for copper and aluminum neutral conductors.
  3. Auxiliary Contact Kit: Auxiliary set of contacts arranged to open before switch blades open.

2.3  MOLDED-CASE CIRCUIT BREAKERS AND SWITCHES

  7. Thermal-Magnetic Circuit Breakers: Inverse time-current element for low-level overloads and instantaneous magnetic trip element for short circuits. Adjustable magnetic trip setting for circuit-breaker frame sizes 250A and larger.
  8. Adjustable Instantaneous-Trip Circuit Breakers: Magnetic trip element with front-mounted, field-adjustable trip setting.
  9. Electronic Trip-Unit Circuit Breakers: RMS sensing; field-replaceable rating plug; with the following field-adjustable settings:
  10. Instantaneous trip.
  11. Long- and short-time pickup levels.
  12. Long- and short-time time adjustments.
  13. Ground-fault pickup level, time delay, and I2t response.

  4. Ground-Fault Protection: [Integrally mounted] [Remote-mounted] relay and trip unit with adjustable pickup and time-delay settings, push-to-test feature, and ground-fault indicator.
  5. Shunt Trip: 120-V trip coil energized from separate circuit, set to trip at [55] [75] percent of rated voltage [Provide 20 ampere double-throw auxiliary contacts in enclosed shunt trip circuit breakers protecting elevator controllers.]
  6. Undervoltage Trip: Set to operate at 35 to 75 percent of rated voltage [without intentional] [with field-adjustable 0.1- to 0.6-second] time delay.
  7. Auxiliary Switch: [One SPDT switch] [Two SPDT switches] with "a" and "b" contacts; "a" contacts mimic circuit-breaker contacts, "b" contacts operate in reverse of circuit-breaker contacts.
  8. Key Interlock Kit: Externally mounted to prohibit circuit-breaker operation; key shall be removable only when circuit breaker is in off position.

  4. Undervoltage Trip: Set to operate at 35 to 75 percent of rated voltage [without intentional] [with field-adjustable 0.1- to 0.6-second] time delay. Provide "dummy" trip unit where required for proper operation.
  5. Auxiliary Switch: [One SPDT switch] [Two SPDT switches] with "a" and "b" contacts; "a" contacts mimic circuit-breaker contacts, "b" contacts operate in reverse of circuit-breaker contacts.
  6. Key Interlock Kit: Externally mounted to prohibit operation; key shall be removable only when switch is in off position.

2.4  ENCLOSURES

  1. NEMAAB1 and NEMAKS1 to meet environmental conditions of installed location.

Identify enclosure types on Drawings. Provide NEMA 4X in coastal regions or corrosive environments.

  1. Outdoor Locations: NEMA250, Type[3R][4X].
  2. Kitchen Areas: NEMA250, Type4X, stainless steel.
  3. Other Wet or Damp Indoor Locations: NEMA250, Type4.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1  EXAMINATION

  1. Examine elements and surfaces to receive enclosed switches and circuit breakers for compliance with installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance.
  2. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2  CONCRETE BASES

Retain this Article for equipment installed on concrete bases.

  1. Coordinate size and location of concrete bases. Verify structural requirements with structural engineer.
  2. Concrete base is specified in Division26 Section Common Work Results for Electrical, and concrete materials and installation requirements are specified in Division03.

3.3  INSTALLATION

  1. Comply with applicable portions of NECA1, NEMAPB1.1, and NEMAPB2.1 for installation of enclosed switches and circuit breakers.
  2. Mount individual wall-mounting switches and circuit breakers with tops at uniform height, unless otherwise indicated. Anchor floor-mounting switches to concrete base.

Retain first paragraph below if seismic controls are required for Project. Coordinate with Drawings.

  1. Comply with mounting and anchoring requirements specified in Division26 Section Vibration and Seismic Controls for Electrical Systems.
  2. Temporary Lifting Provisions: Remove temporary lifting eyes, channels, and brackets and temporary blocking of moving parts from enclosures and components.
  3. Working Clearance: Provide minimum of 48” working clearance free of obstructions directly in front of equipment. The space equal to the width and depth of the equipment and extending to a height of 6 ft above the equipment or to the structural ceiling, whichever is lower, shall be dedicated to the electrical installation. No pipes, ducts, or other equipment foreign to the electrical installation shall be located in this zone.
